IMD Issues Heavy Rain Alert for Pune and Mumbai
IMD issued heavy rain alerts for Pune, Mumbai, and nearby districts after overnight showers caused waterlogging in several areas.

Heavy rain lashed parts of Maharashtra on Sunday night. As a result, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued alerts for Pune, Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad on Monday.

The IMD warned that heavy rain and thunderstorms will hit Pune, Raigad, Satara, and Aurangabad. Therefore, it issued an orange alert for these districts, urging residents to stay indoors and take precautions.

Yellow alert for Mumbai and nearby areas

Meanwhile, a yellow alert has been issued for Mumbai city and suburbs and Thane. This alert signals heavy rainfall but at a lower risk level than the orange alert.

In addition, the IMD’s Nowcast predicted moderate to intense rain in Pune, Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Ahmednagar, Beed, and Latur. Gusty winds and thunderstorms are also likely to accompany the showers.

On the other hand, Nashik, Palghar, Jalna, and Nagpur are under a yellow alert for light to moderate rainfall.

IMD predicts heavy rain this week

The IMD also forecast widespread rainfall across several regions of Maharashtra throughout the week.

"Light to moderate rain/thunderstorm at many/some places with isolated heavy rainfall likely over Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra & Marathawada on 16th September with very heavy falls over Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra & Marathawada 14th & 15th September," the IMD said in its latest bulletin.

Pune faces waterlogging after night rain

Consequently, Pune faced waterlogging in several areas after late-night rainfall. Residents took to X (formerly Twitter) to share images and urged authorities to close schools and colleges due to the difficult conditions.

According to the Times of India, IMD’s Shivajinagar observatory recorded 13.8 mm of rain. Talegaon received 15 mm, Hadapsar 13.5 mm, and Magarpatta 10 mm.

Therefore, officials have advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and follow safety instructions, as heavy rainfall is expected to continue in the coming days.
