Why Suryakumar Yadav Did Not Come Out to Bat Against Oman Despite Wickets Falling?
India rested skipper Suryakumar Yadav and key players against Oman, using the match to rotate the squad and prepare for the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup 2025.

Indian fans had hoped to see fireworks from their team’s batters, particularly from their captain Suryakumar Yadav. However, despite India losing eight wickets in their innings, the skipper never came out to bat against Oman. Surprisingly, a batter of Suryakumar’s caliber was scheduled to bat at number 11 for the match. This unusual decision raised many eyebrows.

Why India Made the Strange Move

India has been the most dominant team in the Asia Cup 2025 so far. In their opening two matches, they easily defeated the UAE and then smashed their arch-rivals Pakistan. These two convincing victories secured India a place in the Super Four stage of the tournament without much effort.

Since the final league-stage game against Oman had no impact on their tournament progression, India decided to rotate their squad. The team gave opportunities to batters who had not yet played significant innings. Even Sanju Samson came in at number three and Hardik Pandya batted at four—positions where Suryakumar usually takes the crease.

When the captain did not bat in these positions, fans expected him to come in at the fall of the next wicket. However, wickets continued to tumble, and Suryakumar never came to the crease. India finished their innings at 188/8 in 20 overs, leaving Suryakumar as the only batter not to face a single delivery.

From an outside perspective, it appears that the primary aim was to give all players some game time, especially in a match that had no bearing on the tournament standings.

Preparing for the Super Four Stage

India now shifts focus to the Super Four stage, where they will face Pakistan in a rematch of the league-stage clash, a game in which India had completely outclassed the Men in Green. As the tournament progresses, it is crucial to understand the depth of the squad and maintain flexibility in the playing XI. This seemed to be India’s strategy against Oman.

In addition to resting Suryakumar Yadav, India made two other notable changes. They decided to rest ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah and mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy. In their place, Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana were given the opportunity to play.

These adjustments allowed India to test their pace options and ensure that the team could adapt to different conditions or handle potential injuries in future matches. The approach underlines India’s focus on squad rotation and readiness for crucial Super Four encounters.
