As the Israel-Hamas war intensifies, Hamas released a photo on Saturday showing 47 Israeli captives. The group claimed the image was taken during Israel’s latest military operation in Gaza City.
The photo carried an Arabic caption calling it a “farewell photograph.” Hamas wrote, “Because of [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu’s intransigence and [Chief of General Staff Eyal] Zamir’s submission, this is a farewell photo at the beginning of the operation in Gaza.”
According to TRT World, Hamas posted the image on its official website. The group stressed that the fate of the captives depends on Israel’s leaders, especially Netanyahu.
Hamas Pushes for a Peace Deal
In the past, Hamas offered to negotiate a comprehensive peace deal. The proposal included Israeli forces leaving Gaza and ending the war, which is now approaching its third year.
However, Netanyahu has rejected all ceasefire offers. He insists Israel will not stop fighting until Hamas is destroyed completely.
Netanyahu Faces Mounting Pressure
Meanwhile, pressure is growing on Netanyahu to end the war and secure the hostages’ release. Many critics in Israel and abroad accuse him of dragging out the conflict to protect his political career, while ignoring the lives of captives.
Israel Strikes Targets Beyond Gaza
In addition to operations in Gaza, Israel expanded its attacks to other countries in the region. On September 9, Israeli forces struck a residential compound in Doha, Qatar.
The attack killed five senior Hamas leaders. Reports said they were meeting to discuss a US-backed proposal to end the war.
Death Toll Continues to Rise
The Gaza Health Ministry reported that more than 65,000 Palestinians have died since Hamas’ October 7 surprise attack in southern Israel. Human rights groups have accused Israel of genocide, pointing to widespread civilian deaths and destruction.
International Legal Battles Intensify
In November last year, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. They face charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Moreover, Israel is fighting a genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over its actions in Gaza.
This latest photo release by Hamas adds more tension to an already volatile situation. Both sides remain unwilling to compromise, making peace talks seem increasingly unlikely.
