US President Donald Trump and Tesla CEO Elon Musk met on Sunday for the first time since their heated fallout. The meeting took place at right-wing activist Charlie Kirk's memorial service in Glendale, Arizona. Thousands of conservatives, top Republicans, and supporters gathered to honor Kirk’s life and legacy.
A Surprising Reunion
Kirk, 31, was assassinated on September 10 while addressing a university rally in Utah. Before Trump took the stage to speak, Musk walked up to him. The two shook hands, sat together, and spoke for a few moments. Later, Musk posted a photo of their handshake on X, formerly Twitter, with the caption, “For Charlie.”

This moment was especially significant because it was their first face-to-face interaction since June, when their feud reached its peak over Trump’s controversial “Big Beautiful Bill.”
The Dispute Over Trump’s Bill
Initially, tensions began when Trump pushed a major bill through Congress. Musk strongly opposed the legislation. He argued that it would increase US debt and eliminate tax incentives for electric vehicles and solar panels — products central to Tesla’s business.
As the bill progressed, Musk’s criticism intensified. By June, the dispute turned public and highly personal. Musk suggested Trump should be impeached. Moreover, he claimed credit for Trump’s 2024 election victory and warned that Trump’s tariffs could trigger a recession later this year.
Additionally, Musk accused Trump of being linked to Jeffrey Epstein’s files. He even threatened to pull SpaceX rockets — which the federal government relies on — from government use.
Trump Strikes Back
In response, Trump lashed out. He threatened to deploy his Department of Government Efficiency to investigate Musk’s companies and the subsidies they receive.
Although Musk tried to de-escalate the conflict, Trump refused to reconcile. During an NBC interview, when asked if he wanted to repair his relationship with Musk, Trump firmly said, “No.” When pressed further, he added, “I would assume so, yeah.”
Trump made it clear he had “no intention of speaking” to Musk. He also accused the tech billionaire of disrespecting the presidency.
Kirk’s Prediction Comes True
Interestingly, earlier this year, Charlie Kirk had predicted that Trump and Musk would eventually mend their relationship. “They’re much stronger together,” he said.
At the memorial service, Kirk’s wife, Erika, delivered a moving message about forgiveness. Remarkably, she said she even forgave the shooter who killed her husband.
Trump praised Erika’s strength and described her as having a “noble spirit.” However, he admitted he could not extend the same forgiveness to his political rivals.
“I hate my opponents and I don’t want the best for them,” Trump said. “I’m sorry. I am sorry, Erika, but now Erika can talk to me and the whole group, and maybe they can convince me that that’s not right, but I can’t stand my opponent.”
A Moment of Symbolism
Ultimately, the handshake between Trump and Musk carried symbolic weight. It came amid deep divisions within conservative politics.
Although neither man confirmed a reconciliation, their brief meeting suggested a possible thaw in tensions. Moreover, it fulfilled Kirk’s prediction — that the two powerful figures might one day stand side by side again.
