Heavy overnight rain battered Kolkata and nearby areas on Tuesday. Consequently, the downpour flooded streets and homes, causing major disruption to daily life. Moreover, at least three people died in separate incidents of electrocution.
Three Die Due to Electrocution
To begin with, Lalbazar Police Control confirmed three deaths. “Three persons have died due to electrocution, as per our reports so far," a police official told PTI.
Furthermore, one victim was 60-year-old Jitendra Singh. He suffered an electric shock on Hossain Shah Road around 5:15 a.m. Authorities rushed him to SSKM Hospital. However, doctors declared him dead on arrival. Meanwhile, officials are still working to identify the other two victims.
Heavy Rain Submerges Streets
As a result of the heavy rainfall, many neighborhoods across Kolkata went underwater. Water even entered several homes and apartment complexes.

Additionally, traffic came to a standstill as vehicles were stranded on flooded roads. Commuters faced long jams and major delays throughout the city.
At the same time, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned of more heavy rain. According to the IMD, a low-pressure system over the northeast Bay of Bengal could bring additional showers to south Bengal districts, including Kolkata.
Areas Record Massive Rainfall
Significantly, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) reported extreme rainfall levels in several areas:
-
Garia Kamdahari recorded 332 mm in just a few hours.
-
Jodhpur Park received 285 mm.
-
Kalighat saw 280 mm.
-
Topsia had 275 mm.
-
Ballygunge measured 264 mm.
-
Thantania in north Kolkata recorded 195 mm.
Metro Services Suspended
Consequently, flooding disrupted metro services on the Blue Line (Dakshineswar–Shahid Khudiram). Waterlogging was worst between Mahanayak Uttam Kumar and Rabindra Sarobar stations.
Therefore, authorities immediately halted train services on this stretch. “The decision to halt operations between Shahid Khudiram and Maidan stations was taken in the interest of public safety,” a Metro Railway spokesperson told PTI.
City on Alert for More Rain
As a precaution, officials placed emergency teams on standby for rescue and relief operations. Moreover, they advised residents to avoid flooded areas and stay indoors unless absolutely necessary.
Overall, as more rain looms, the city continues to struggle to return to normal life.
