Jimmy Kimmel made a powerful comeback to late-night television on Tuesday after a weeklong suspension. His return episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! drew massive attention, becoming the most-watched regularly scheduled episode in the show’s history with 6.3 million viewers.
The suspension came after ABC and Disney halted the show due to Kimmel’s controversial remarks about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Record Viewership on Return
Kimmel’s highly anticipated return resulted in a major ratings boost. ABC confirmed that the episode reached record numbers, especially among viewers aged 18 to 49, a key demographic for advertisers.
“In the key advertiser-friendly demographic of viewers ages 18 to 49, the show scored its highest regularly scheduled episode in over 10 years,” ABC announced.
According to Nielsen data, Tuesday night’s episode saw a 343% increase from last season’s average of 1.4 million viewers. Among adults aged 18 to 49, the show achieved a 0.87 rating, a 568% jump from the previous season’s average of 0.13.
This also marked the best demographic rating for a regularly scheduled episode since 2015.
However, not all stations aired the episode. ABC affiliates Nexstar and Sinclair chose to withhold it after the controversy, causing a 23% loss in U.S. household viewership.
The Controversial Remarks
The suspension followed intense backlash over comments Kimmel made regarding Charlie Kirk’s death. Kirk was shot and killed during a college event in Utah, sparking widespread debate.
On his show, Kimmel criticized certain political groups for exploiting the tragedy. “We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterise this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it,” Kimmel said.
His remarks were met with fury from many conservatives and sparked a storm on social media.
Disney later issued a statement, calling Kimmel’s comments “ill-timed” and “insensitive.” This statement confirmed the reason behind the temporary suspension of the show.
Kimmel’s Emotional Apology
When Kimmel returned to the stage, he delivered a heartfelt monologue. He thanked his audience for their support during the controversy and addressed the issue directly.
“I don’t think there’s anything funny about it,” Kimmel said, visibly emotional. He also added “I posted a message on Instagram on the day he was killed, sending love to his family and asking for compassion. I meant it and I still do.”
Kimmel also clarified that he never intended to link the shooter, Tyler Robinson, to any political group.
“Who thinks I did point a finger? I get you are upset… If the situation were reversed, there’s a good chance I would’ve felt the same way,” he explained.
He added, “I don’t think the murderer who shot Kirk represents anyone. This is a sick person who thinks violence is a solution, and it isn’t over.”
