Democratic lawmakers released new documents on convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein on Friday. The papers show Epstein’s links with prominent conservatives, including Elon Musk, Steve Bannon, and Peter Thiel.
The US Department of Justice provided the documents to the House Oversight Committee, which is investigating how authorities handled Epstein’s sex-trafficking charges. Epstein died in federal custody in 2019.
Epstein’s Calendar Reveals Meetings
The Democratic minority released copies of Epstein’s calendar. It showed a breakfast with Steve Bannon in February 2019. Another entry listed a lunch with Peter Thiel in November 2017. A separate note mentioned a possible trip by Elon Musk to Epstein’s private island in December 2014.
A 2000 flight manifest included Prince Andrew, whose ties to Epstein are well-known. Documents also showed Epstein paying someone listed as “Andrew” for “Massage, Exercise, Yoga” that same year.
Musk’s Past Comments
Earlier this year, Elon Musk criticized Donald Trump for not releasing the so-called “Epstein files” on social media. In July, Musk asked:
"How can people be expected to have faith in Trump if he won’t release the Epstein files?"
Democrats Speak Out
Democrats highlighted the importance of the documents. Sara Guerrero, a committee spokesperson, said:
"It should be clear to every American that Jeffrey Epstein was friends with some of the most powerful and wealthiest men in the world. Every new document produced provides new information as we work to bring justice for the survivors and victims."
Eric Swalwell, a Democratic representative from California, posted on X, "Trump OUTS @elonmusk as being in Epstein Files. Revenge for Elon outing Trump? Elon, what do you know about Trump’s involvement?"
Republicans Push Back
The Republican-led committee criticized Democrats for selective disclosure. Their statement read, "This is old news. It’s sad how Democrats are conveniently withholding documents that contain the names of Democratic officials. Once again, they are putting politics over victims. That’s all Robert Garcia and Oversight Dems know how to do. We are releasing them all soon."
Efforts to Release All Files
The documents are the latest in the ongoing scrutiny of the Epstein case. Democrats and a small group of Republicans filed a petition in the House to force a vote on legislation to release all Epstein files. The petition needs 218 signatures. It is expected to reach that number after Adelita Grijalva won a special election in Arizona this week.
Even if the House passes the bill, it still needs Senate approval, where Republican leaders show little interest. Trump, who called the controversy a “Democrat hoax”, would also need to sign the bill.
