Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov issued a strong warning on Saturday. This came after US President Donald Trump supported shooting down Russian planes that enter NATO airspace.
Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly, Lavrov rejected claims that Russia plans to attack NATO or EU countries. “Russia is being accused of almost planning to attack the North Atlantic alliance and the European Union countries,” he said.
Furthermore, he added, “Russia has never had and does not have any such intentions. However, any aggression against my country will be met with a decisive response.”
Thus, Lavrov stressed that Russia wants peace but will act firmly if provoked.
NATO Backs Defensive Action
Earlier this week, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte supported Trump’s comments. Trump suggested NATO countries should shoot down Russian drones or planes if they enter allied airspace.
“If so necessary. So I totally agree here with President Trump: if so necessary,” Rutte said on Fox News’ “Fox & Friends”. He explained that NATO forces are trained to assess threats and decide whether to escort Russian planes out of allied airspace or take further action.
Therefore, Rutte made it clear that NATO acts cautiously but firmly to protect its member states.
Tensions Remain High
This exchange highlights rising tensions between Russia and NATO. While Trump and NATO officials discuss defensive measures, Russia maintains it has no aggressive plans but will respond decisively to attacks.
Moreover, both sides are sending strong messages. As a result, the situation shows the fine line between diplomacy and military action in Europe’s tense security environment.
