New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced on Sunday that he is ending his re-election campaign, just over a month before the city’s election day. He shared the news in a video message on social media, with the song ‘My Way’ playing in the background.
Previously, Adams was a Democrat but had switched to run as an independent candidate. He had been trailing in recent polls. Additionally, he faced federal corruption charges, which the Trump administration later dropped after he cooperated during immigration raids.
Reasons for Quitting
In his statement, Adams sat beside a photograph of his late mother. He said running a winning campaign had become impossible. He blamed “constant media speculation about my future” and the city’s campaign finance board’s decision to withhold millions in matching funds because of suspicious donations.
Furthermore, the mayor admitted he had lost the trust of some New Yorkers after the charges. However, he insisted the allegations were “unjust.” He said, “I was wrongfully charged because I fought for this city, and if I had to do it again, I would fight for New York again.”
Despite withdrawing, Adams will serve the remainder of his term, which ends on New Year’s Eve. His name will remain on the ballot for the November election because the deadline to remove candidates passed.
The Mayoral Race Narrows
With Adams out, the race now focuses on three candidates: Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani, former governor Andrew Cuomo, and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa.
Earlier, Adams had promised to stay in the race despite reports that the Trump administration had offered him an ambassadorship to drop out. This offer was reportedly designed to help Cuomo defeat Democratic Socialist frontrunner Mamdani. Adams criticized Cuomo sharply, saying, “Andrew Cuomo is a snake and a liar. Andrew has had a career of pushing Black candidates out of races.”
Competitors React
After Adams’ withdrawal, Cuomo said: “We face destructive extremist forces that would devastate our city through incompetence or ignorance, but it is not too late to stop them.” He did not mention Mamdani by name.
Meanwhile, Mamdani posted a social media video, criticizing Adams for failing to deliver on promises and vowing to beat Cuomo again. He said, “To Andrew Cuomo: You got your wish. You wanted Trump and your billionaire friends to help you clear the field. But don’t forget, you wanted me as your opponent in the primary, too. And we beat you by 13 points. Looking forward to doing it again on November fourth.”
At the same time, Sliwa, the Republican nominee, said he had turned down multiple offers of millions of dollars to end his campaign.
Implications of Adams’ Exit
Overall, Adams’ exit changes the dynamics of the mayoral race. Consequently, Mamdani, Cuomo, and Sliwa will now compete for leadership of the nation’s largest city. As a result, the race is expected to become even more competitive in the final weeks before the election.
