India is set to face the West Indies in the first Test of the two-match series in Ahmedabad today, October 2. For the first time in more than a decade, India will play at home without three of their biggest match-winners. Virat Kohli, R. Ashwin, and Rohit Sharma, who defined India’s dominance on home soil, are missing from the squad. Their absence is felt even more after New Zealand ended India’s unbeaten home run last year.
India’s Fortress Finally Breached
For years, travelling to India for Tests was seen as one of the hardest challenges in cricket. Under Kohli’s leadership, India turned their home grounds into fortresses. From the 2012/13 loss against England, India went unbeaten in 18 straight series, losing only four Tests in that span.
But the aura of invincibility broke last year. New Zealand whitewashed India 3–0, handing them three defeats in a single home season for the first time in 41 years. That shock result also highlighted how dominant India had been in the previous decade.
Recent Struggles Abroad
After the New Zealand setback, India’s overseas form also dipped. They suffered a 1–3 defeat in Australia and managed only a 2–2 draw in England. Though India fought hard in England after a leadership change, the series was one they could have won.
Now, back on familiar soil, India will look to bounce back strongly.
Opportunity Against West Indies
India’s opponents, the West Indies, arrive on the back of a poor run. They were recently thrashed 0–3 at home by Australia. In the Jamaica Test, they were bowled out for just 27, their lowest total in 70 years.
On paper, India appear far stronger. Yet the visitors, led by Roston Chase, want to take inspiration from New Zealand’s success. Chase said, “New Zealand came last year and dominated India, so we are really trying to learn from what they did and try to put some of those stuff in place so that we can play some good cricket and compete and try to win the series.”
India’s New Leaders and Key Players
This will be the first major assignment for Shubman Gill as captain. He will lead a young side with little baggage from the past. While Kohli and Rohit leave big shoes to fill, both had begun to struggle against spin towards the end of their Test careers.
The biggest void is Ashwin’s absence. He was India’s most decisive match-winner in home conditions. Still, India’s spin unit looks balanced with Ravindra Jadeja as the lead option, supported by Kuldeep Yadav, Washington Sundar, and Axar Patel.
The pace attack is equally strong. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj will spearhead a full-strength fast-bowling line-up.
Batting Will Decide India’s Fate
India’s batting group remains under the spotlight. They faltered against both spin and pace when New Zealand visited last year. However, the confidence of a solid performance in England should boost them. Youngsters like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sai Sudharsan, and Dhruv Jurel will have chances to make an impact.
Head-to-Head Record
India and the West Indies have faced each other in 100 Tests. India have won 23 and lost 30 overall. At home, India have won 13 and lost 14. But the West Indies have not won a Test in India since 1994.
Recent form paints a clearer picture. India have won just six of their last 12 home Tests. The West Indies, meanwhile, have lost eight consecutive series. Their last series victory came against Zimbabwe in 2022.
Pitch and Weather Report
Shubman Gill confirmed that the Narendra Modi Stadium will feature a red-soil pitch. Such surfaces usually help both seamers and spinners and wear down as the match progresses. A thin grass covering has been left on the wicket, which could give fast bowlers early assistance.
Gill also hinted that India might avoid rank turners this time. Instead, they expect a sporting pitch that will test all departments. Overcast skies and possible showers on the opening day may further assist seamers.
Team News
Nine positions in India’s XI are nearly locked. With Rishabh Pant still unavailable, Dhruv Jurel will keep wicket. Sai Sudharsan is expected to bat at No. 3 after his promising debut in England.
Given the weather conditions, Gill suggested India might play three seamers. That could mean a choice between all-rounder Nitish Reddy and pacer Prasidh Krishna to join Bumrah and Siraj. Kuldeep Yadav may again miss out if India opt for batting depth.
The West Indies face injury setbacks. Shamar Joseph and Alzarri Joseph, their leading pacers, are unavailable. Anderson Phillip is likely to partner Jayden Seales with the new ball. Spinner Jomel Warrican, who starred in Pakistan earlier this year with a nine-wicket haul, will lead the spin attack.
A special subplot will be the return of Tagenarine Chanderpaul, son of West Indies legend Shivnarine.
