White House Halts Planned Drug Tariffs Amid Negotiations with Big Pharma
The White House pauses planned pharma tariffs as it negotiates deals with companies like Pfizer to offer discounted medicines through TrumpRx.

US President Donald Trump last week threatened to impose triple-digit tariffs on imported pharmaceutical products. These tariffs were scheduled to take effect on Wednesday. However, the White House now says it may not need to implement them immediately. The administration is exploring alternatives to avoid hitting consumers and companies.

A White House official told Politico that the government has paused the plan. Instead, it is negotiating with major pharmaceutical companies to prevent higher tariffs on their branded drugs. For example, a deal with Pfizer was announced on Tuesday.

Officials Emphasize Negotiations

During the Pfizer announcement in the Oval Office, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick addressed the tariff issue. He said, “We are going to let [the talks] play out and finish these negotiations, because they are the most important thing to the American people.” He added, “So we are standing by and helping and working with them.”

Clearly, the administration prefers agreements over immediate penalties. This approach allows companies to adjust and ensures Americans do not face sudden price hikes.

The Pfizer Deal

President Trump revealed a multi-part deal with Pfizer on Tuesday. According to the agreement, Pfizer will invest $70 billion to expand its pharmaceutical manufacturing capacity in the US. Moreover, it will join a direct-to-consumer platform called TrumpRx.gov, offering discounts on a “large majority” of its primary care medications and “some select specialty brands.”

In return, Pfizer will receive a three-year pause on the planned tariffs. Trump said this deal could serve as a model for other drugmakers. Nevertheless, he warned that companies who refuse to cooperate could still face penalties.

“What we’d do is put a tariff on them of an equivalent amount, and we take it that way, and nobody wants to play that game,” Trump said. “So they’re all going to be good.”

Uncertainty Remains

Despite the announcement, it remains unclear how and when the Trump administration will apply the pharmaceutical tariffs. Meanwhile, discussions with other companies continue. Therefore, the government is balancing pressure on pharma firms with the goal of keeping medicine affordable for Americans.
