The third T20I of the three-match series between England and New Zealand in Auckland was abandoned after just 3.4 overs due to heavy rain, and ended in no result. With this, England won the T20I series 1-0. Continuous rain stopped play early, repeating the result of the opening game in Christchurch, which was also washed out due to bad weather.
Seifert Starts Strong
Tim Seifert gave New Zealand a fast start. He scored 23 not out off 11 balls. He hit two boundaries off Luke Wood before the first long rain break that lasted nearly 90 minutes.
When the match resumed for 14 overs a side, Seifert attacked again. He smashed two sixes off Brydon Carse, including a bold reverse-scoop over fine leg that thrilled the crowd.
Carse struck back by dismissing Tim Robinson for 2. Jacob Bethell caught a top edge at deep midwicket. Rachin Ravindra then hit a pulled six off Carse but struggled against Wood’s sharp movement. Just after Seifert’s second six, rain returned and stopped play again.
Match Abandoned
Officials tried to restart the match at 10 p.m. local time with only eight overs per side. But heavy rain returned as players prepared to take the field. The umpires abandoned the game soon after.
Players React
England captain Harry Brook expressed his frustration. He said, “It’s very frustrating. The weather hasn’t been ideal. But great for the boys to get some time out there.”
He added, “It’s a great place to tour, we’ve had an amazing time so far. We’ve got the ODIs coming up and we’re looking forward to it. We’ve got a few big names coming back and hopefully we can keep that momentum in the next few weeks.”
New Zealand skipper Mitchell Santner also shared his disappointment. He said, “I guess this time of the year it (rain) is always a potential. It’s always nice to play England, no matter what time of the year you play.”
He praised his bowlers from the first game. “The way we bowled in that first game [was good], especially on a Hagley wicket that did give us a little bit. The second game, we were put under a lot of pressure on a good wicket, so when we come across that again, we’ll have learnings from that.”
Brief Scorecard
Player of the Series: Harry Brook
The washout ended a frustrating start to the season for New Zealand. Their earlier series against Australia also faced weather issues. New Zealand had bowled well in the first T20I, limiting England to 153 for 6 at Hagley Oval. But England dominated the second match, posting a record 236 for 4 and winning by 65 runs.
England kept the same team for the decider. They backed their balanced side, including Liam Dawson as the second spinner. New Zealand made one change — Zak Foulkes replaced Kyle Jamieson. But the weather made all plans meaningless. Both teams will now prepare for the ODI series starting Sunday in Mount Maunganui. England will aim to keep their winning rhythm, while New Zealand will hope for clearer skies and a better result. Stay tuned with JUSZNEWS for regular updates!
