New Zealand defeated England by six wickets in the first ODI of the three-match series at Bay Oval. After being invited to bat, England lost early wickets in quick succession. Except for Harry Brook and Jamie Overton, none of the batters crossed the 10-run mark. Harry Brook hit a superb, blazing century, while Jamie Overton missed his half-century by just four runs. Zakary Foulkes (4/41 in 7 overs) and Jacob Duffy (3/55 in 6 overs) wreaked havoc on England’s batting lineup. Matt Henry also took two wickets.
While chasing, New Zealand also lost three quick wickets, but a 92-run partnership between Daryl Mitchell and Michael Bracewell turned the match in New Zealand’s favor. Brydon Carse (3/45 in 10 overs) tried his best, but his efforts were not enough to stop New Zealand from sealing the victory. Daryl Mitchell remained unbeaten till the end. With this win, New Zealand took a 1-0 lead in the series.
Foulkes and Henry Dominate with the New Ball
Earlier, New Zealand’s bowlers had ripped through England’s lineup. Matt Henry’s first delivery bowled Jamie Smith with a perfect inswinger, setting the tone. Foulkes then dismissed Duckett, Root, and Bethell in quick succession with sharp seam movement.
At 10 for 4, England looked finished before Brook’s resistance. His counterattack came after a dropped catch by Rachin Ravindra on 63, which proved costly.
England’s Top Order Crumbles Early
A strong westerly wind swept across the Bay Oval on Sunday, carrying with it the sound of laughter from across the Tasman Sea. England’s top order had collapsed spectacularly in what was supposed to be the unofficial start to the Ashes build-up.
Jamie Smith, Ben Duckett, Joe Root, and Jacob Bethell — all key players for the upcoming Ashes — fell cheaply as England crashed to 10 for 4 in just over five overs. Jos Buttler soon followed at 33 for 5.
Sam Curran’s dismissal at 56 for 6 marked Zak Foulkes’ fourth wicket in his debut ODI spell, highlighting England’s disastrous start. Ironically, back home in the UK, the collapse happened even before the match’s scheduled start time due to daylight saving.
Brook Fights Alone with Blazing 135
When it looked like a total humiliation, Harry Brook produced one of the finest solo efforts in recent memory. The stand-in white-ball captain smashed 135 runs off 101 balls, rescuing England to a somewhat respectable 223 in 35.2 overs.
It was Brook’s fourth century in New Zealand, and arguably more impressive than his 186 in Wellington in 2023. He began aggressively, scoring his first 36 runs entirely in boundaries and ending with nine fours and 11 sixes.
He brought up his hundred with three consecutive sixes off Jacob Duffy and continued attacking even after partners kept falling. Jamie Overton gave him brief support, scoring 46 off 54 balls in an 87-run stand for the seventh wicket, but once he departed, England folded quickly.
Brook’s innings accounted for over 60% of England’s total, breaking Robin Smith’s long-standing record from 1993.
New Zealand Recover After Early Wobbles
New Zealand, chasing 224, also stumbled early. Luke Wood and Brydon Carse gave England hope with quick wickets. Will Young was bowled for 5, and Kane Williamson fell for a first-ball duck on his return after 15 years in ODIs.
At 24 for 3, New Zealand looked shaky, but Daryl Mitchell (78 off 91) and Michael Bracewell (51 off 51) steadied the chase with a 92-run partnership.
Bracewell had an early life when Joe Root dropped him on 2, while Mitchell was reprieved at 33 after Luke Wood missed an easy catch off Adil Rashid. Once settled, both batted with control and purpose.
Though Bracewell was run out later, Mitchell carried on confidently, sealing the win with a six. New Zealand won by four wickets with 80 balls remaining, a convincing margin despite their early stumbles.
Brief Scorecard
Despite Brook’s heroics, England never truly recovered. Their bowlers fought hard early in the defense, but New Zealand’s middle order proved too steady. Daryl Mitchell and Bracewell’s calm partnership ensured the hosts avoided collapse and wrapped up victory easily. Mitchell ended the game in style, smashing the winning runs over backward square.
