Zohran Mamdani Becomes New York’s First Indian-American Mayor
Zohran Mamdani made history as New York City’s first Indian-American mayor and promised to end corruption, challenge billionaires, and create a fair city for all.

Zohran Mamdani took charge as New York City’s new mayor and quickly set his priorities. He promised to break away from the city’s old political ways. Speaking to a cheering crowd, he said, “I will put an end to the culture of corruption.”

The 34-year-old lawmaker said his government will serve everyone, not just the wealthy. “We will build a city that works for all, not just for the rich,” he declared as supporters applauded loudly.

Taking Aim at Billionaires and Trump

Mamdani directly criticized the power of billionaires, including President Donald Trump. He accused them of avoiding taxes while ordinary citizens struggled.

“I will put an end to the culture of corruption that has allowed billionaires like Trump to evade taxation and exploit tax breaks,” he said. His words drew loud applause from the crowd.

Mamdani also addressed Trump personally. “Donald Trump, I have four words for you: turn the volume up,” he said. The comment referred to Trump’s threats and criticism during the campaign. Mamdani’s statement showed defiance and confidence in his vision for the city.

A Personal and Historic Moment

Mamdani thanked his mother, filmmaker Mira Nair, for standing by him throughout his journey. He also quoted India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, saying, “A moment comes, but rarely in history.”

The line reflected how deeply he valued the historic nature of his victory. The audience cheered as he connected his success to the fight for equality and justice.

Defeating a Political Dynasty

Mamdani celebrated the end of what he called “a political dynasty.” His opponent, former governor Andrew Cuomo, accepted defeat. Mamdani praised Cuomo but said the city had chosen a new path.

“My friends, we have toppled a political dynasty,” he said proudly. “Let tonight be the last time I utter his name, as we abandon a politics that answers to the few.”

A Mandate for a New Politics

Mamdani said his win showed that New Yorkers wanted real change. He promised to build a fair city focused on people’s needs, not the rich elite.

“Tonight you have delivered a mandate for change, a mandate for a new kind of politics, a mandate for a city that we can afford,” he said. He ended his speech with hope and determination for New York’s future.
