Union minister and BJP leader Sukanta Majumdar alleged on Sunday that the Trinamool Congress is resisting the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in West Bengal to protect what he described as “crores of unauthorised voters.”
He made the claim while addressing a massive crowd during the Parivartan Yatra in Mohanpur, Paschim Medinipur. Majumdar told supporters that the people of Bengal have already decided to “throw out” the Mamata Banerjee government.
‘Bonafide Citizens Welcome SIR’
Majumdar said genuine voters support the SIR, while only TMC leaders oppose it. He told the gathering that the revision process has exposed years of infiltration and fraudulent documentation.
“The SIR has been welcomed by every bonafide citizen of West Bengal, but only the TMC ministers and other leaders are opposing it. Why?” he asked.
He added, “Because they now know that, with the deletion of names of crores of unauthorised voters who infiltrated into the country and got ration cards and Aadhar documents with the help of TMC leaders will be thrown out now.”
‘TMC’s Vote Bank Has Shrunk’
Majumdar argued that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s support base has weakened sharply. According to him, the TMC cannot avoid a major electoral defeat in the coming months. He also said that people across Bengal want ‘parivartan’, which the BJP promises to deliver.
Majumdar added that Bengal residents would “reply democratically” to the alleged attacks carried out on opposition workers by TMC leaders.
TMC Hits Back at SIR Exercise
The Trinamool Congress strongly criticised the Election Commission’s decision to conduct the SIR, calling it an example of “silent vote rigging.”
Mamata Slams BJP and EC
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused the BJP of trying to win elections through money power.
“The BJP wants to win polls on the basis of notes, not votes,” she said.
She also claimed the Centre and Election Commission were “branding all Bengali migrants as Bangladeshis.”
Both Mamata and Abhishek Banerjee said the SIR is effectively a hidden attempt to bring in the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
Mamata issued a stern warning:
“If even one voter’s name is dropped, we will crush the BJP-led government.”
During a rally in central Kolkata, she declared that the TMC would not allow the BJP “to snatch our rights.”
Mamata Warns of ‘Super Emergency’
The Chief Minister further accused the BJP of trying to impose “a super emergency” in West Bengal.
She claimed that 14 people died out of fear, including some by suicide, and blamed the state of panic on the SIR process.
She criticised the Election Commission, saying it had not issued “a single condolence message.”
Mamata also argued that the SIR timeline was unrealistic and accused the BJP of preventing the state administration from functioning properly.
BLOs Raise Safety Concerns
Meanwhile, many booth-level officers (BLOs) in West Bengal expressed fears over their security during the house-to-house voter verification. Some BLOs even threatened to boycott duties unless they received better protection. They raised these concerns during their training sessions, pointing to rising political tensions.
