Russia Claims Pokrovsk Capture as Ukraine Calls It Pressure Tactic
Russia claimed it captured Pokrovsk after months of fighting, but Ukraine rejected the announcement and called it a pressure tactic linked to ongoing peace talks.

Russia claims control of Pokrovsk

Russia said its forces seized the eastern Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk. If true, this would mark a major battlefield gain. However, Ukraine dismissed the statement and said Moscow is using “loud statements” to influence talks about ending the war.

The fighting over Pokrovsk lasted for months. During this time, Russian troops suffered thousands of deaths and injuries. The city remained a key target because of its position and links to major routes.

The announcement came just after US and Ukrainian officials held high-level talks in Florida. It also came one day before Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, was scheduled to travel to Moscow to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Ukraine warns of pressure tactics

Ukraine did not directly confirm or deny Russia’s claim. However, Andriy Kovalenko, who heads the Ukrainian Center for Countering Disinformation, said Russia would increase military pressure and accompany it with strong public statements.

He said Russia would make “many attempts to apply pressure on the front line over the next weeks and accompany this with loud statements.” He added that these efforts are aimed “exclusively for the Western audience and to raise diplomatic stakes” during negotiations on how to end the conflict.

Earlier on Monday, the Ukrainian Armed Forces said that “despite the difficult situation” in and around Pokrovsk, their troops “continue to hold back the enemy’s offensive.”

Putin visits frontline as claim is announced

Russia’s statement came a day after President Vladimir Putin visited troops near the front line. According to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, General Valery Gerasimov, the chief of the Russian General Staff, told Putin that Russian forces had captured Pokrovsk during a visit to a command post on Sunday.

The Kremlin also released a video on Monday. CNN later geolocated the footage. It showed Russian soldiers raising a Russian flag in the city centre of Pokrovsk. This part of the city had been under Moscow’s influence for some time, as Russian units slowly pushed in from the south.

Why Pokrovsk matters

Pokrovsk had served as an important logistics centre for Ukraine. It connected to key roads and railway lines. These links helped supply Ukrainian forces in the region.

However, repeated drone and artillery attacks damaged the main highway and rail line. This forced Ukraine to set up alternate supply routes. As a result, the strategic importance of the city had already weakened over time.

Putin praises troops and speaks of progress

During his Sunday visit, Putin thanked Russian commanders and soldiers for their actions in the area. “I would like to thank you for the results of the operations in Pokrovsk – both you, the entire command and personnel of the group, and, of course, the fighters, our guys who are carrying out these combat missions,” he told them, according to Peskov.

He also said that any progress in Pokrovsk would help “ensure steady progress” toward achieving Russia’s broader goals in the war.
