Sanjay Bangar Backs Kohli and Rohit, Questions Selection Doubts
Sanjay Bangar backed Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, saying their place in India’s ODI team should never be in doubt and that the BCCI must view them differently because of their long and proven impact.

Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar has delivered a clear message to the BCCI. He believes Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma deserve special consideration because of what they have achieved over the years. According to him, no one should even question their place in the Indian ODI side.

His comments came after reports suggested that the Indian board may use the Vijay Hazare Trophy as a key filter while selecting players for the 2027 World Cup. This news raised concerns around the future of senior players like Kohli and Rohit.

Selection Panel Remains Unclear on Their Future

The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee, along with head coach Gautam Gambhir, has not given a clear answer about including Kohli and Rohit in the long-term World Cup plans. The next tournament is scheduled to take place in South Africa.

The main worry is about their form and fitness over the next two years. Both players now feature in only one international format. Because of this, the selectors want them to play in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy. This List A tournament, which begins later this month, is seen as a proof of commitment by the board.

Recent Performances Strengthen Their Case

Despite the doubts, Kohli and Rohit have played a major role in India’s recent ODI success. In four of the last six matches, the pair has carried the batting line-up. Together, they have scored three centuries, with two coming from Kohli, and five half-centuries, with three from Rohit.

Rohit won the Player of the Series award during India’s tour of Australia. Soon after, Kohli earned the same honour in the home ODI series against South Africa. These performances have strengthened their case to remain central figures in the team.

“You Have to Treat Them Differently”

Sanjay Bangar made his stand very clear while speaking to JioStar.

"I don't think the place of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the team should have been a question. Look at what they have done over so many years," Bangar said.

He explained that both players have already retired from two formats of the game. Because of this, it is natural for them to need only a short period to get back into top form.

"They have retired from two formats, so it's obvious they might take just a couple of sessions to get back into action, because they have done it so often. They don't need to play as many matches as a younger player. Once they are there, once they are hungry and fit, you want players of that quality. You have to treat them differently and give them space," the former India batter added.

Different Standards for Proven Champions

Bangar underlined that players of Kohli and Rohit’s level cannot be judged by the same standards as younger cricketers. He believes their experience, hunger, and match-winning ability set them apart.

In his view, the team management must give them time and respect. He stressed that their presence alone can lift the performance of the entire side.

As the Vijay Hazare Trophy approaches, all eyes will now be on the board’s next move. The debate over how India treats its legends is far from over.
