Prime Minister Narendra Modi told NDA MPs on Tuesday that the public should not bear the brunt of the airline’s operational issues as IndiGo continues to face a major cancellation crisis. Union parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju briefed reporters about the prime minister’s message.
Rijiju said, "During the NDA parliamentary meeting the PM told NDA MPs that people should not be troubled, face inconvenience. Rules and laws are good but in order to correct the system it is not right to harass people."
Statement Comes Before Key Lok Sabha Debate
The minister’s comments come hours before the Lok Sabha is set to discuss the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The IndiGo crisis is also expected to come up during the session, with civil aviation minister Ram Mohan Naidu likely to address the situation in the House.
Widespread Disruptions Across Metros
Flight cancellations continued for another day. According to officials, more than 200 IndiGo flights were cancelled on Tuesday alone. This included 121 cancellations in Bengaluru, 58 in Hyderabad, 41 in Chennai, and four in Kerala.
IndiGo said it had stabilised its schedule and achieved a 91% on-time performance. However, the government has intervened and decided to cut the airline’s winter schedule, handing some of its slots to other carriers to reduce disruption for travellers.
DGCA Orders IndiGo to Cut Flights
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) issued an order asking the airline to scale down operations.
The order stated, “IndiGo has not demonstrated the ability to operate its schedules efficiently. It is directed to reduce the schedule by 5% across sectors. IndiGo is required to submit a revised schedule by 5 pm on 10th December.”
Over 4,000 Flights Cancelled in a Week
The airline has been struggling for days. In the last week alone, more than 4,000 IndiGo flights were cancelled across airports in India. The mass cancellations have caused significant delays and inconvenience for thousands of passengers.
