Trump Clears Nvidia to Sell Older AI Chips to China, Says Xi Reacted ‘Positively’
US President Donald Trump has allowed Nvidia to sell older-generation AI chips to China, a move he personally conveyed to Chinese President Xi Jinping.

US President Donald Trump has authorised Nvidia to sell its H200 artificial intelligence chips to customers in China. He informed Chinese President Xi Jinping of this decision. The H200 is an older model compared to Nvidia’s newest Blackwell chip, which is considered the world’s most advanced AI chip.

Although Trump has made it clear that the Blackwell chip will not be sold to China, the new approval could still bring billions of dollars in revenue for Nvidia. The company already has more than $500 billion in pending orders for its top AI chips for this year and next — even before counting demand from Chinese buyers.

President Announces Decision on Truth Social

Trump shared the update on his Truth Social account. He wrote, “I have informed President Xi, of China, that the United States will allow NVIDIA to ship its H200 products to approved customers in China, and other Countries, under conditions that allow for continued strong National Security. President Xi responded positively!”

He also said that other US companies such as Intel and AMD will soon begin selling their chips internationally under similar conditions. Trump defended the decision, saying it would create more jobs, boost US manufacturing, and ultimately benefit American taxpayers.

Ban on AI Chip Sales Effectively Eased

With this move, the US government has effectively relaxed earlier restrictions on exporting AI chips to China. The two countries remain in a tight race for technological dominance, especially in artificial intelligence.

Nvidia issued a statement supporting the decision. The company said, “We applaud President Trump’s decision to allow America’s chip industry to compete to support high paying jobs and manufacturing in America.”

Nvidia added, “Offering H200 to approved commercial customers, vetted by the Department of Commerce, strikes a thoughtful balance that is great for America.”

Months of Lobbying by Nvidia CEO

The development comes after several months of lobbying by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, who pushed for permission to sell at least some chips to customers in China. The H200 approval gives Nvidia access to a major market without compromising US national security rules.
