The informal “Chai pe Charcha” held after the end of the Parliament session offered a clear signal of changing power equations within the Congress. Traditionally, the Speaker and the Prime Minister sit in the front row during this tea meeting. This time, however, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also sat in the front row and quietly sipped tea, drawing wide attention.
Notably, Priyanka is a first-time Member of Parliament and holds no formal role in the Congress parliamentary party. Even so, she received a prominent seat, while senior leaders such as Supriya Sule sat behind her. According to sources, Priyanka and Prime Minister Narendra Modi even exchanged polite words about Wayanad, her Lok Sabha constituency.
Sharp political instincts on display
Unlike her brother Rahul Gandhi, who often skips these informal gatherings, Priyanka chose to attend. She appeared relaxed, confident, and smiling. This reflected her understanding of political optics and the value of visibility.
Her appearance came a day after a moment in Parliament that quickly went viral. During the House proceedings, she light-heartedly asked Union Minister Nitin Gadkari for an appointment to discuss a highway project in Wayanad. Gadkari responded immediately and invited her to visit his office after the session. This exchange highlighted her ease in building connections across party lines.
Priyanka takes charge in Rahul’s absence
With Rahul Gandhi away, Priyanka has effectively taken a leadership role in Parliament. She arrived by 9.30 am every day and stayed actively engaged. She also maintained a strong media presence to ensure her views reached the public.
However, her approach went beyond visibility. She appeared to push for a broader and more inclusive strategy within the party.
Effort to bring sidelined leaders back into debates
According to party sources, Priyanka played a key role in bringing back senior leaders who had earlier felt ignored. This included figures like Manish Tewari and Shashi Tharoor, especially after internal tensions during debates such as “Operation Sindoor”.
Priyanka reportedly believed the party was weakening itself by sidelining experienced speakers. She felt this approach helped the BJP. As a result, Manish Tewari spoke several times on major bills, including the SHANTI Bill. Meanwhile, Shashi Tharoor’s isolation appeared to ease. He spoke on the VB-G RAM G Bill and joined protests at the Makar Dwar over the National Herald issue.
Inclusive politics shaped by Sonia Gandhi’s influence
Much like her mother, Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka seems to favour an inclusive political style. She appears focused on preventing internal divisions from becoming a tool for the BJP.
Inside the Lok Sabha, she has not avoided confrontation. She challenged the Prime Minister on sensitive issues such as Vande Mataram, a topic many Congress leaders hesitated to raise. At the same time, she used a mix of firmness and humour to question the government.
BJP views Priyanka as a tougher political rival
Within the BJP, there is a growing belief that Priyanka poses a more difficult challenge than Rahul Gandhi. Party insiders feel Rahul is easier to target politically, while Priyanka’s calm demeanour and lack of long-term grudges make her harder to counter.
Meanwhile, speculation has surfaced about a possible renewed link with political strategist Prashant Kishor. During his Bihar campaign, Kishor openly criticised Rahul Gandhi but remained respectful toward Priyanka, adding fuel to these rumours.
Two power centres emerge within Congress
As the Winter Session ends, the presence of two power centres in the Congress is becoming increasingly clear. Many party members now believe Rahul Gandhi continues to lead ideological battles. However, they see Priyanka as better suited for strategic planning and day-to-day management.
Her strong presence during this session has increased her influence. Many see this as an early sign of a much larger role for Priyanka Gandhi in shaping the party’s future.
