Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the new terminal building at Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport in Guwahati, Assam. During the event, he also toured the newly built Terminal 2 facility.
The new terminal significantly expands the airport’s capacity and marks a major infrastructure upgrade for the state.
Terminal designed for rising passenger demand
The Terminal 2 building can handle about 13.1 million passengers every year. Authorities built the terminal at a cost of ₹4,000 crore. Officials said the overall airport development project is worth ₹5,000 crore. Out of this amount, ₹1,000 crore has been set aside for Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facilities, according to news agency PTI.
With this expansion, officials said Guwahati airport aims to become a key aviation hub not only for Assam but for the entire Northeast region.
Design reflects Assam’s culture and biodiversity
Officials explained that the design of the new terminal draws inspiration from Assam’s rich cultural heritage and natural biodiversity. The terminal spreads across an area of about 1,40,000 square metres.
They added that the structure blends modern facilities with regional identity, making it both functional and symbolic.

PM Modi’s schedule in Assam continues
On Sunday, December 21, PM Modi said he will pay floral tributes at the Shaheed Smarak Sthal. The memorial honours the martyrs who lost their lives during the historic Assam Movement.
After that, he will travel to Namrup in Dibrugarh district. There, he will attend the ground-breaking ceremony of the Ammonia-Urea Fertilizer Project of Assam Valley Fertilizer and Chemical Company Limited.
“This is an important project, which will help meet the fertilizer needs of Assam as well as other states. At the same time, it will reduce imports, as a result of which self-reliance will increase,” he added.
