Bangladesh is facing growing unrest marked by political tension, street violence, and attacks on minorities. Protests and clashes have increased after political changes and the killing of youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi.
At the same time, incidents like the lynching of Dipu Chandra Das and the shooting of Bajendra Biswas have raised serious concerns about the safety of Hindus and other minority communities. The situation has also strained India–Bangladesh relations, with India urging stronger action to protect minorities and restore law and order.
Who Was Bajendra Biswas?
Bajendra Biswas was a 40-year-old Hindu man working as an Ansar member in Bangladesh. He was the son of Probitra Biswas and belonged to Kadirpur village in Sylhet Sadar upazila. Bajendra was on duty at a garment factory when he was shot dead by his colleague.
Bajendra Biswas Shot Dead in Mymensingh
According to news agency ANI, Bajendra Biswas was shot dead by a fellow Ansar member in Bhaluka upazila of Mymensingh district, Bangladesh. The accused, Noman Mia, was arrested after the incident.
Monindra Nath, Acting Secretary General of the Bangladesh Hindu Buddha Christian Unity Council, confirmed the killing to ANI and said, “Yes, the incident is confirmed.”
Who Is the Accused Noman Mia?
The accused Noman Mia is also an Ansar member. He is the son of Lutfar Rahman and comes from the Baluturi Bazar area under Taherpur Police Station in Sunamganj district.
Both Bajendra and Noman were posted at the same workplace when the shooting took place.
How the Shooting Happened
The incident occurred on Monday, December 29, around 6.30 pm inside Sultana Sweaters Limited factory in the Mehrabari area of Bhaluka.
An eyewitness, APC Md Azahar Ali, who was also on duty at the factory, described the moment of the attack.
He said, "Confirming the matter, APC Md Azahar Ali, an Ansar member on duty with the Labib Group and an eyewitness to the incident, said that at the time of the incident, Noman Mia and Bajendra Das were sitting together in his room. Suddenly, Noman Mia pressed the shotgun against Bajendra Das's thigh and said, 'Shall I shoot?' and then fired. After that, Noman fled the scene. He also stated that he did not see any argument or dispute between them prior to the incident."
The eyewitness said there was no fight or argument between the two before the shooting.
Why Bajendra Biswas’s Killing Has Raised Concern
This killing happened just a few days after another Hindu man, Dipu Chandra Das, was lynched by a mob in Mymensingh. Dipu’s death caused anger and fear among minority communities.
Protests took place in New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Agartala, and parts of Madhya Pradesh. The Bangladesh interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, also condemned the killing.
Protests and Calls to Protect Minorities
Several Hindu organisations held protests near Bangladeshi embassies and missions in the past week. They demanded stronger protection for minorities in Bangladesh.
With the deaths of Dipu Chandra Das and Bajendra Biswas, worries about the safety of Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh have grown even stronger.
