Delhi Capitals (DC) edged past UP Warriorz (UPW) by seven wickets on the last ball in the 7th match of the TATA Women’s Premier League 2026 at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. UP Warriorz lost their first wicket on the very first ball of the match, but a blazing half-century by Meg Lanning and a useful knock from Harleen Deol helped them post 154/8 in 20 overs.
Shafali Verma (2/16 in 4 overs) and Marizanne Kapp (2/24 in 4 overs) were the most impactful bowlers for Delhi Capitals.
While chasing, Lizelle Lee and Shafali Verma gave Delhi Capitals a blazing start. Deepti Sharma (2/26 in 3 overs) pulled the match into the last over. There was a strong feeling of déjà vu when Delhi Capitals found themselves needing six runs from the final over once again. Just three nights earlier, they had failed to chase seven off the last six balls. This time too, tension gripped the DC camp when Marizanne Kapp failed to connect with the first delivery, leaving the equation unchanged.
However, Kapp responded under pressure. She drove the next ball firmly through the covers, easing some nerves. Sophie Ecclestone then bowled two dot balls, pushing the game to the final delivery. With just one run required, Laura Wolvaardt stayed calm and played a crisp cover drive off the final ball to seal DC’s first victory of the season. The win also handed UP Warriorz their third straight defeat.
Strong opening stand sets the platform
The match should not have gone so deep for Delhi Capitals after their openers dominated the chase early. Lizelle Lee and Shafali Verma put together a solid 94-run partnership that laid the foundation. Lee continued her fine form, scoring her second consecutive half-century. She struck eight fours and three sixes during her fluent innings.
After the openers gave DC momentum, Jemimah Rodrigues chipped in with a quick 21 from 14 balls to keep the chase on track. Delhi were chasing a target of 155 after UP Warriorz managed 154 for 8 in their 20 overs.
UPW struggle despite Lanning’s return to form
UP Warriorz captain Meg Lanning finally found her rhythm this season, scoring her first fifty of WPL 2026 against her former team. She began confidently, hitting her first ball to the square-leg boundary and became only the third player to cross 1,000 runs in WPL history.
Lanning and Phoebe Litchfield steadied the innings after UPW lost Kiran Navgire early. The pair added 47 runs for the second wicket before Litchfield was stumped off Sneh Rana’s first delivery. Once the field spread, Lanning accelerated and played freely.
The standout moment came in the ninth over when Lanning stepped forward and smashed Chinelle Henry straight over the sight-screen for the only six of the UPW innings. Alongside Harleen Deol, she built an 85-run stand for the third wicket and reached her fifty in 32 balls. At 130 for 2 after 15 overs, UPW looked set for a big finish.
Middle-order collapse derails UP Warriorz again
Despite a strong platform, UP Warriorz once again failed to close out their innings. The collapse began when Lanning pulled a short ball from Nandani Sharma straight to deep square leg. Shweta Sehrawat briefly counter-attacked, but the momentum did not last.
The 17th over, bowled by Shafali Verma, produced only three runs. Soon after, UPW made a surprising move by retiring Harleen Deol out. Deol had started well, scoring 25 off 13 balls and later moving to 47 off 36, but the decision backfired.
Chloe Tryon, playing her first match after spending three seasons on the bench with Mumbai Indians, replaced Deandra Dottin in the XI. However, she managed just one run from three balls. UPW lost six wickets for 20 runs in just over four overs and finished well below a competitive total.
This collapse followed a worrying pattern. In their previous two matches, UPW had lost four wickets for 11 runs against Royal Challengers Bengaluru and three wickets for one run against Gujarat Giants.
Shafali and Lee dominate the powerplay
Delhi Capitals began their chase aggressively. Shafali Verma and Lizelle Lee attacked from the start, hitting six boundaries in the first five overs. Lee then targeted her former South Africa teammate Chloe Tryon, smashing two fours and a six in a 16-run over to finish the powerplay strongly.
Shafali continued the assault by hitting boundaries off Asha Sobhana and Sophie Ecclestone. Lee reached her fifty in just 30 balls, with DC cruising at 87 without loss after ten overs.
Late wobble but DC hold firm
UP Warriorz finally found breakthroughs when Shafali attempted a reverse sweep and was caught brilliantly by Deepti Sharma at short third. Lee followed 19 balls later, mistiming a shot to long-on off Deepti’s bowling.
A brief boundary-less spell late in the innings, which included the dismissal of Jemimah Rodrigues, gave UPW a glimmer of hope. However, Wolvaardt and Kapp ensured there were no further mistakes as DC crossed the line on the final ball.
Gujarat Giants batters did their best. Georgia Wareham made an important contribution, while the fiery knocks by Bharti Fulmali and Kanika Ahuja helped Gujarat Giants post an above-par total on the board. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur then produced a masterclass under pressure to steer Mumbai Indians to a seven-wicket victory over Gujarat Giants. MI successfully chased a challenging target of 193, registering the second-highest run chase in Women’s Premier League history. Stay tuned with JUSZNEWS for regular updates!
