Denmark’s Prime Minister Frederiksen in Greenland to Signal Support Amid US Pressure
Denmark’s prime minister visited Greenland to show support as President Donald Trump renewed efforts to acquire the strategically important Arctic island.

Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen travelled to Greenland to meet the island’s leader, Jens-Frederik Nielsen. The visit comes at a sensitive moment, as US President Donald Trump has stepped up efforts to acquire Greenland.

Visit Follows NATO Talks in Brussels

Before heading to Greenland, Frederiksen met NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Brussels. After their meeting, Rutte said on X that both leaders agreed “to enhance deterrence and defence in the Arctic”.

This sequence highlighted Denmark’s focus on security and stability in the Arctic region amid growing global interest.

Frederiksen Shows Strong Support for Greenland

After arriving in Nuuk, Frederiksen made it clear that her visit aimed to reassure Greenland’s people during a difficult period.

“I am first and foremost in Greenland today to show our strong Danish support for the Greenlandic people. It’s a very difficult time, everyone can see that,” she said.

She also described the situation as serious and stressed that Denmark would rely on diplomacy and political engagement.

“It is a serious situation we are in. Everyone can see that. Now there is a diplomatic, political track that we will pursue,” Frederiksen said. She added that the trip was a “working” visit designed to prepare their “next steps”.

Trump Says ‘Framework’ Is Ready

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump claimed earlier this week that the United States has already set a “framework” to acquire Greenland. He also said he would remove tariffs on European countries that oppose his plan to buy the island.

On Truth Social, Trump wrote, “Based upon a very productive meeting that I have had with the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, we have formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic Region. This solution, if consummated, will be a great one for the United States of America and all NATO Nations,”

He further said that officials are discussing issues linked to the Golden Dome project. According to Trump, Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff will help lead negotiations from the US side.

Greenland Urges Citizens to Prepare for Emergencies

At the same time, Greenland’s authorities have advised residents to keep enough supplies for at least five days in case of an emergency. Officials released a public brochure to address frequent power outages and to strengthen overall preparedness.

The document aims to “strengthen the security of the population and to ensure that society’s overall preparedness is even stronger.” Authorities clarified that the brochure does not mention Trump and said they began working on it last year.

Peter Borg, Greenland’s minister in charge of self-sufficiency, said the advice should not be seen as a warning of an imminent crisis.

“The publication of the brochure with practical and simple advice for households is not an expression that we expect a crisis,” Borg said.

Separate Reference to Bangladesh Politics

Separately, the article mentioned political developments in Bangladesh. It said a recent speech was widely viewed as an attempt to keep the Awami League politically relevant ahead of national elections.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party is expected to dominate the polls, while the hardline Jamaat-e-Islami is also likely to gain ground. Although the Awami League still has strong grassroots support, many senior leaders remain in exile in India and Europe. Bangladesh saw renewed unrest late last year, with developments directly or indirectly linked to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s exile in India.
