New Zealand outclassed Afghanistan by five wickets in the 4th match of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. After deciding to bat first, Afghanistan put 182/6 on the scoreboard in 20 overs with the help of a blazing half-century by Gulbadin Naib. After losing two wickets in the powerplay, Gulbadin Naib and Rahmanullah Gurbaz built a quickfire 79-run partnership. Sediqullah Atal and Rahmanullah Gurbaz also contributed useful runs that helped Afghanistan cross the 180-run mark. Lockie Ferguson (2/40 in 4 overs) was the most successful bowler for New Zealand. Matt Henry, Jacob Duffy and Rachin Ravindra took one wicket each.

While chasing, Mujeeb Ur Rahman (2/31 in 4 overs) gave early blows to New Zealand. But Tim Seifert and Glenn Phillips built a quick 74-run partnership and kept New Zealand in the chase. When Phillips got out in the 10th over, Mark Chapman joined Tim Seifert and built another partnership with him. At this point, New Zealand were in complete control of the match. Finally, Daryl Mitchell and Mitchell Santner showed some fireworks, and New Zealand cruised to the target with 13 balls to spare. Afghanistan played well. Gulbadin Naib settled quickly and delivered his best performance. However, Afghanistan fell 30–40 runs short on a pitch like MA Chidambram Stadium, which is a paradise for batters. New Zealand batsmen grabbed the opportunity with both hands. Even after losing wickets in the early overs, they managed to score at a good rate. Tim Seifert and then Glenn Phillips scored runs and also maintained the required run rate. Daryl Mitchell and Mitchell Santner wrapped things up as soon as possible. Overall, there was a good display of batting from both teams. Be ready for more action.
