Violence and unrest disrupted voting across Bangladesh as the country attempted to shift from a transitional setup to an elected government. According to The Daily Star, at least 72 people were injured in 14 separate incidents during polling.
This election carries major political importance. It is the 13th National Election and the first vote held after the removal of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The country had been under a transitional government led by Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus.
Police and Army Step In
Clashes broke out at several polling centres. Security forces, including police and army personnel, intervened to control the situation. Law enforcement agencies detained at least nine people in two incidents — five in Munshiganj and four in Jhalakathi.
The disturbances raised concerns about security during the voting process.
Multiple Clashes at Polling Stations
In Noakhali’s Hatiya, at least 31 people, including a BTV journalist, were injured during a clash between supporters of the National Citizen Party and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.
Hatiya Police Station Officer-in-Charge Saiful Alam told The Daily Star that attempts to influence voting at a polling centre reportedly triggered the violence.
“Several people were injured in the incident. No complaint has been filed so far,” the OC said.
In Sharankhola in Bagerhat, at least 19 people were injured in a clash between supporters of Jamaat-e-Islami and BNP candidates. Police and local residents said the fight broke out on a road leading to a polling centre in Sonatola village.
Four injured individuals were admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital. Another four received treatment at Sharankhola Upazila Health Complex.
In Meherpur, clashes between BNP and Jamaat supporters left nine more people injured.
BNP Leader Killed in Khulna
Tragedy struck in Khulna when a BNP leader died during a confrontation with Jamaat activists outside a polling station.
The deceased was identified as Mohibuzzaman Kochi, 55, a former office secretary of the Khulna city unit of the BNP. According to BD News, the incident occurred at 8:10 am local time at the Alia Madrasah polling station in Khulna Sadar.
Former organising secretary of Khulna Sadar Thana BNP, Yusuf Harun Majnu, described the events. “There was tension at the Alia Madrasah polling station since the morning. The principal of Alia Madrasa was campaigning for the Jamaat there," he said.
“When he was obstructed, he pushed Mohibuzzaman Kochi. He struck a tree and hit his head. That is why he died.”
Complaints in the Capital
In Dhaka, some voters claimed they could not cast their ballots due to discrepancies in the voting process. These complaints added to the tense atmosphere surrounding the election.
High Stakes and Rising Tension
This election marks a critical moment for Bangladesh. It represents the country’s attempt to restore elected governance after political upheaval. However, repeated incidents of violence and rising tensions have cast a shadow over the democratic exercise.
Overall, the situation remains tense as Bangladesh awaits the outcome of a highly significant and turbulent election.
