Can Suryakumar Yadav Rewrite His Pakistan Record?
Suryakumar Yadav looks to turn his renewed form into a defining comeback as he aims to overcome past struggles and lead India strongly against Pakistan in the World Cup.

Suryakumar Yadav sparked a debate last year about his form. He repeatedly said he was not out of form, only out of runs. His explanation made sense. In the nets, he struck the ball cleanly. He felt mentally strong and physically sharp. However, in matches, one mistake ended his innings. The scores did not reflect how well he believed he was batting.

For any batter, an important question often arises — is it worse to be out of form or just out of runs? Form is not always about the numbers on the scoreboard. A player may feel confident, time the ball well in practice, and move smoothly at the crease. Yet, the runs may still not come in matches.

A Difficult 2025 Season

The year 2025 turned into a nightmare for Suryakumar. Not long before that, he had ranked as the No. 1 T20 batter in the world. But during this period, he scored only 218 runs in 19 innings. His highest score was 47 not out, and only one innings crossed 25. He averaged 13.62, with a strike rate of 123.16.

For a batter known for dominating bowlers, these numbers were hard to accept. The pressure felt heavier because he was also the captain. Like his predecessor Rohit Sharma, he believes in leading by example.

India continued to win matches during this phase. That success brought mixed emotions. The team performed well, but his personal contribution remained limited.

A Break That Changed Everything

Suryakumar felt disappointed with himself. Therefore, after the South Africa series in December, he stepped away from the game for a short time. He cleared his mind and recharged.

The break worked. From the start of 2026, especially during the New Zealand series, he rediscovered his rhythm. He opened the year with 32 off 22 balls in Nagpur. Then he followed with scores of 82 not out, 57 not out, 63, and 84 not out.

His best effort came in India’s World Cup opener against the United States, where he scored 77 after the team had slipped to 77 for six. That match marked his first World Cup appearance as India’s captain.

Perfect Timing Before the World Cup

His return to runs could not have come at a better time. Winning the Player of the Series award boosted his confidence before the World Cup. Now, he has a chance to achieve something special — lead India to a title at home and possibly become the first captain to defend the crown successfully.

The Pakistan Challenge Awaits

India’s immediate focus, however, is the Group A clash against Pakistan at Colombo’s Premadasa Stadium. As captain, Suryakumar aims to strengthen India’s dominant record against their rivals in T20 World Cups. Yet, as a batter, he faces a bigger personal test.

A Weak Record Against Pakistan

Unlike several former Indian captains, Suryakumar has struggled against Pakistan in T20 internationals. Between October 2021 and September 2025, he scored only 112 runs in eight innings. His highest was 47 not out during the Asia Cup in Dubai. As captain, he has managed just 48 runs from 45 balls against them. Overall, he averages 16 and strikes at 113.13 against Pakistan.

If there was ever a moment to correct that record, it is now.

How Past Captains Performed

Mahendra Singh Dhoni holds a perfect 7-0 record as captain in World Cup matches against Pakistan across formats. Though he batted lower down the order, he made key contributions and led with sharp strategy.

Mohammad Azharuddin guided India to three ODI World Cup wins over Pakistan, including a vital 59 in Manchester in 1999. Sourav Ganguly fell first ball in 2003, but India still won. Rohit Sharma smashed 86 off 63 balls in the 2023 ODI World Cup clash in Ahmedabad.

The only Indian captain to lose a World Cup match to Pakistan remains Virat Kohli. His 57 off 49 balls in Dubai in 2021 could not prevent defeat. However, Kohli also scored a brilliant 77 in Manchester in 2019 and remains the only Indian captain with two World Cup half-centuries against Pakistan.

Focus on the Present

Suryakumar understands history, but he will not dwell on it. His focus remains simple — keep scoring freely, improve his record against Pakistan, and lead India to another win. A victory would seal India’s place in the Super Eights.

If he succeeds, it will mark personal redemption, statistical correction, and team progress — all at once.
