Sri Lanka crushed Australia by eight wickets, with 12 balls to spare, in the 30th match of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 at Pallekele International Stadium in Sri Lanka. Australia put 181 runs on the board in 20 overs after being invited to bat first. Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh put together a superb 104-run partnership for the first wicket.
Until the 16th over, Australia were cruising at 160/4, but in the last four overs they lost six wickets and added only 21 runs. Dushan Hemantha (3/37 in 4 overs) was the most successful bowler for Sri Lanka, while Dushmantha Chameera also took two wickets.
While chasing, Sri Lanka lost an early wicket. Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis built a blazing 97-run partnership for the second wicket and brought Sri Lanka back on track. Kusal Mendis scored 51 runs off 38 balls. When he was dismissed in the 13th over, Sri Lanka still needed 77 runs to win.
From there, Nissanka took charge along with Rathnayake and formed another quick partnership. They chased down the target with 12 balls to spare. With this win, Sri Lanka entered the Super Eight in style. Australia, on the other hand, are now on the verge of exiting the tournament. Australia’s possibility of moving into the next round depends on other results.
Marsh and Head Launch Early Assault
Australia began aggressively. Returning captain Mitchell Marsh and opener Travis Head dominated the powerplay. They powered Australia to 104 runs in the first 50 legal balls. Both batters reached their half-centuries quickly and looked unstoppable.
Marsh returned to the playing XI in place of Matt Renshaw, Australia’s top scorer in the tournament, and justified the move immediately. Head, who had not scored a T20 fifty since the last IPL season, matched Marsh shot for shot. At that stage, Australia appeared to have regained their rhythm.
Sri Lanka’s Spin Turns the Game
However, Sri Lanka refused to surrender. Despite losing fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana early due to a calf injury, their spinners stepped up. They shared six wickets and slowed the run flow dramatically.
From a commanding 104 in 50 balls, Australia managed only 77 runs from the final 70 deliveries while losing 10 wickets. Legspinner Dushan Hemantha and Dunith Wellalage applied pressure. Hemantha eventually dismissed Head after persisting with flight and turn.
Cameron Green’s difficult tournament continued as he scored just 3 off 7 balls. Marsh also fell when he mistimed a full delivery from Hemantha. The momentum clearly shifted.
Fielding Brilliance Changes Momentum
Sri Lanka’s fielding added to Australia’s problems. Pathum Nissanka, who had earlier dropped Glenn Maxwell, made up for it with a stunning catch later. He leapt more than two metres at backward point to intercept Maxwell’s reverse sweep.
Kamindu Mendis removed Tim David with his left-arm spin. Dushmantha Chameera delivered outstanding death bowling. A sharp bouncer dismissed Josh Inglis, and he later removed Marcus Stoinis with a clever slower legcutter.
Maheesh Theekshana also recovered from an expensive powerplay to bowl a tight 19th over. In the last four overs, Australia managed only 21 runs. The final two overs produced just six runs.
Adam Zampa, regarded as one of the best T20 spinners of all time, had a forgettable outing. He finished wicketless and conceded 41 runs in four overs.
Nissanka and Mendis Dominate the Chase
Sri Lanka’s chase began steadily. Marcus Stoinis dismissed Kusal Perera early, but Pathum Nissanka counterattacked. Sri Lanka scored 61 runs in the powerplay, with Nissanka smashing 38 off 20 balls.
Kusal Mendis joined the charge. He hit four boundaries in two overs of spin and reached his half-century before Nissanka. For a brief period, Australia tightened the game with quiet overs from Zampa, Nathan Ellis and Maxwell.
When Stoinis dismissed Mendis in the 13th over, Sri Lanka still needed 77 runs off 47 balls. The match appeared balanced.
Nissanka Seals the Victory in Style
Australia’s hopes faded quickly. Pavan Rathnayake struck two early boundaries to maintain the momentum. Nissanka then took charge again. He lofted Zampa straight down the ground and attacked Stoinis with a confident pull shot for six.
With Sri Lanka needing 41 off the last five overs, Nissanka accelerated further. He smashed Ellis for two sixes and then punished Zampa again, taking 15 runs off the 18th over.
Nissanka remained unbeaten on a brilliant century. Earlier in the match, he had dropped Maxwell but later dismissed him with a stunning effort. He completed his hundred and guided Sri Lanka home with two overs remaining.
Australia Face Uncertain Future
This defeat leaves Australia depending on other results to survive in the tournament. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka advance to the Super Eights with renewed confidence, driven by disciplined spin bowling, sharp fielding, and a match-winning century from Nissanka.
