Tarique Rahman is preparing to assume office as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh on Tuesday. This will be his first time holding the country’s top executive position.
The oath-taking ceremony will take place at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban in Dhaka. This marks a departure from tradition, as such ceremonies are usually held at the presidential residence, Bangabhaban.
Big Election Win Strengthens Coalition
Rahman’s rise comes after a strong victory in the 13th general election. His party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, secured 209 out of 297 seats in parliament. Its ally, Jamaat-e-Islami, added 68 more seats, giving the alliance a clear majority.
In a major development, the party led by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the Awami League, was not allowed to contest the election.
How the Swearing-in Will Take Place
The process will happen in steps. First, all newly elected members of parliament will take their oath earlier in the day. After that, they will choose their parliamentary party leader.
As head of the majority party, Rahman will then formally take charge as Prime Minister. He will replace interim government chief Muhammad Yunus, who took office after Hasina’s administration fell during mass protests in 2024.
A Historic Moment in Rahman’s Career
Rahman, 60, comes from a powerful political family. He is the son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and late President Ziaur Rahman.
He returned to the country only two months ago after spending 17 years in self-imposed exile in London. Despite his strong political background, he has never held public office before. This makes his appointment a significant and closely watched moment.
Call for Unity and Key Priorities
After winning the election, Rahman spoke in a calm and unifying tone. He stressed the need for cooperation across political groups.
“Our paths and opinions may differ, but in the interest of the country, we must remain united,” he said.
He also pointed out the major tasks ahead. These include rebuilding the economy, improving governance, and restoring law and order.
Ceremony to Host Global Guests
Around 1,200 guests, including international representatives, are expected to attend the event. Leaders and officials from several countries will be present to witness the transition.
India to Send Om Birla as Representative
India will be represented at the ceremony by Om Birla. He will attend along with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not attend due to prior commitments.
The invitation was sent by interim Chief Adviser Yunus. Leaders from 12 other countries, including China, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, were also invited.
India Highlights Strong Ties
India’s Ministry of External Affairs said Birla’s presence reflects the “deep and enduring friendship” between the two nations. It also shows India’s continued support for Bangladesh’s democratic transition.
