ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026: England Outclass Sri Lanka in Super Eight Clash, Phil Salt Shines
England defeated Sri Lanka by 51 runs after bowling them out for 95, climbing to the top of Group 2 in the Super Eight stage.

England crushed Sri Lanka by 51 runs in the second match of the Super Eight at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy. After being invited to bat, England scored 146/9 in 20 overs. Phil Salt led the innings with a blazing 62 off 41 balls. Will Jacks and Harry Brook also played short but useful innings. Dunith Wellalage (3/26 in 4 overs) was the most successful bowler for Sri Lanka, while Maheesh Theekshana and Dilshan Madhushanka took two wickets each.

While chasing, Will Jacks (3/22 in 4 overs) and Jofra Archer (2/20 in 3 overs) dismantled Sri Lanka’s top order within the first six overs. Sri Lanka were bowled out for 95 in 16.4 overs. Liam Dawson and Adil Rashid also claimed two wickets each. Dasun Shanaka was the highest scorer for Sri Lanka.

With this win, England are now at the top of Group 2 in the Super Eight stage.

England’s Uneven Batting Effort

Earlier, England had reached 37 for 2 in the first six overs. Although that seemed steady in hindsight, it was not a smooth start. Jos Buttler managed only 7 from 14 balls before Wellalage trapped him lbw.

Sri Lanka chose to bowl first after winning the toss. The decision was influenced by their earlier strong performance against Australia at the same venue during the group stage.

Salt handled the humid conditions well and scored his first half-century of this World Cup. He reached 62 from 36 balls, marking his second fifty across all T20 World Cup editions. Notably, Jacks’ 21 was England’s second-highest score, showing how difficult the innings was.

Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka managed his bowlers effectively for much of the innings. Dilshan Madushanka (2 for 25) and Maheesh Theekshana (2 for 21) maintained pressure. But Shanaka’s own cameo ended dramatically. After hitting two sixes on his way to 30, he attempted a third. The ball was brilliantly relayed back from the midwicket boundary, leaving Sri Lanka at 82 for 8. Jacks took the catch and casually tossed it back into play to Tom Banton to complete the dismissal.

Jacks Turns Match with the Ball

England’s total of 146 for 9 initially appeared slightly below par. Phil Salt led the scoring with 62, while Dunith Wellalage impressed for Sri Lanka with figures of 3 for 26.

However, Will Jacks changed the game during the chase. He bowled four of the first eight overs and picked up 3 for 22 with ease. His early breakthroughs crushed Sri Lanka’s hopes.

Jacks dismissed Kusal Mendis, who pushed a return catch back to him. Soon after, Pavan Rathnayake lofted a shot to Jacob Bethell at cover. Then Wellalage failed to clear Jamie Overton at mid-on.

Jofra Archer also played a key role, finishing with 2 for 20. Among his wickets was Pathum Nissanka, who flicked a catch to Overton at deep midwicket. By the end of the powerplay, Sri Lanka were struggling at 34 for 5 and had little chance of recovery.

Sri Lanka were chasing a modest target of 147. However, the hosts collapsed for just 95 in exactly 100 legal deliveries. Their careless approach cost them dearly in what should have been a manageable chase.. The defeat extended their losing streak against England to 12 matches. England now sit one point ahead of Pakistan and New Zealand, who had a washout on Saturday.

With most recognised batters already dismissed, Sri Lanka needed composure. Instead, they continued with aggressive shots. Dushmantha Chameera and Madushanka were the last two to fall, both bowled while attempting big hits.

In the end, England’s disciplined bowling and key contributions from Jacks and Archer secured a comfortable win and strengthened their position at the top of the group. Stay tuned with JUSZNEWS for regular updates!
