New Zealand crushed Sri Lanka by 61 runs in the sixth match of the Super Eight round of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
After being invited to bat first, New Zealand recovered from 84/6 in 12.1 overs to post 168/7 in 20 overs. Mitchell Santner and Cole McConchie added a quickfire 84 runs for the seventh wicket. The partnership was broken on the last ball of the innings when Dushmantha Chameera took the wicket. Maheesh Theekshana (3/30 in 4 overs) was Sri Lanka’s most successful bowler, while Chameera also picked up three wickets.
In reply, Sri Lanka lost half their side around the halfway mark. They struggled at 46/5 after 10.1 overs. Rachin Ravindra (4/27 in 4 overs) and Matt Henry (2/3 in 2 overs) dismantled Sri Lanka’s top order and did not allow the batters to settle.
In the end, Sri Lanka managed 107/8 against New Zealand’s disciplined bowling and lost the match by 61 runs. With this defeat, Sri Lanka were knocked out of the tournament.
Sri Lanka Strike Early with Spin
Sri Lanka started strongly. Their spinners tore through New Zealand’s top and middle order. They reduced the visitors to 84 for 6 and put them under heavy pressure.
Maheesh Theekshana led the charge. However, his day swung sharply between highs and lows. Early on, he dropped a diving catch of Tim Seifert off Dilshan Madushanka’s bowling and faced visible frustration from the pacer. But he quickly made up for it. He caught and bowled Finn Allen in the next over and then dismissed Rachin Ravindra and Mark Chapman within three balls. At one stage, his figures read 3-0-9-3.
Still, New Zealand refused to collapse completely.
Santner and McConchie Turn the Match
Just when New Zealand’s innings seemed finished, Mitchell Santner and Cole McConchie launched a fierce counterattack in the final four overs.
McConchie began by attacking Dushmantha Chameera. Santner then took on Theekshana, who had been Sri Lanka’s best bowler until that point. The pair smashed 70 runs in the last four overs alone. They added 84 runs for the seventh wicket, the highest seventh-wicket partnership in T20 World Cup history.
Theekshana’s figures suffered in the end. Santner hit him for 21 runs in his final over, and the momentum shifted completely.
Henry’s Early Blows Break Sri Lanka
New Zealand carried that momentum into the second innings. Matt Henry struck with the very first ball. He bowled Pathum Nissanka with a sharp inswinger that clipped the top of off stump. He completed a wicket-maiden and returned to dismiss Charith Asalanka at the start of another over.
Sri Lanka stumbled to 20 for 2 after six overs. It was the lowest powerplay score of the tournament. McConchie and Santner tightened the screws with disciplined spin. Their three overs in the powerplay went for just 14 runs.
Sri Lanka never recovered from those early blows.
Ravindra Delivers Career-Best Spell
Rachin Ravindra stepped up in a leading role. He struck twice in his first over and finished with 4 for 19, his best T20I figures. He ripped through Sri Lanka’s middle order and removed any hope of a comeback.
New Zealand showed tactical flexibility. They adjusted well after playing on flat pitches in Chennai earlier in the tournament. In Colombo, they relied heavily on spin. They brought in McConchie for James Neesham to strengthen their bowling options. Ish Sodhi also played his first full game of the tournament.
New Zealand bowled only three overs of seam in Sri Lanka’s innings. They used five spin options instead. It was the fewest overs of pace they have bowled in a completed T20I innings.
Sri Lanka Crash Out
Sri Lanka crawled to 107 for 8. The match ended quietly, despite the electric atmosphere earlier in the night. The crowd had created one of the best environments of the tournament, but the team could not match that energy on the field.
New Zealand’s 61-run victory sealed Sri Lanka’s exit and confirmed their own strength as serious contenders for the title.
