Modi calls election a historic milestone
Modi said the election marked a significant moment in Nepal’s democratic journey.
“This historic milestone is a proud moment in Nepal’s democratic journey. As a close friend and neighbour, India remains steadfast in its commitment to working closely with the people of Nepal and their new Government to scale new heights of shared peace, progress and prosperity,” he added.
Balen Shah’s party heads for landslide victory
Meanwhile, early results showed the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) moving toward a major victory. The party has projected Balendra Shah, the rapper-turned-politician, as its candidate for prime minister.
This election is Nepal’s first national vote since last year’s violent youth-led protests. The strong performance by the RSP has shaken the dominance of traditional political parties.
RSP leads in early results
According to the Election Commission of Nepal, the RSP has won 39 of the first 50 declared seats. The party also secured all 10 constituencies in Kathmandu District.
It is also leading in around 80 other seats. The RSP was founded in 2022 by Rabi Lamichhane.
Strong showing in Madhesh Province
The party launched its first election campaign in Janakpur in Madhesh Province. Early trends suggest the RSP could sweep the province. If the trend continues, Shah’s party could win a clear majority and form the next government in Nepal.
