India crushed New Zealand by 96 runs in the final of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. After being invited to bat first, India posted a huge total of 255/5 in 20 overs, thanks to blazing knocks from Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan. James Neesham (3/46 in 4 overs) was the most successful bowler for New Zealand, while Matt Henry and Rachin Ravindra took one wicket each.
While chasing, New Zealand lost wickets at continuous intervals and were all out for 159 in 19 overs. Tim Seifert remained the highest scorer for New Zealand. Jasprit Bumrah (4/15 in 4 overs) was the most successful bowler for India, while Axar Patel also took three wickets. India finally retained the title and became the first team to do so in the history of the T20 World Cup.
India Dominate New Zealand to Win T20 World Cup Again
India national cricket team delivered a commanding performance to defeat New Zealand national cricket team by 96 runs in the T20 World Cup final at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
The stadium was filled with thousands of Indian supporters wearing blue as the hosts produced a powerful display. With this victory, India secured their third T20 World Cup title and became the first team in history to defend the trophy successfully.
India entered the tournament as strong favourites and lived up to expectations by dominating the final.
Explosive Batting Sets Up Huge Total
New Zealand won the toss and asked India to bat first. However, the decision backfired as India’s batters launched an aggressive attack from the start.
Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan scored quick half-centuries with strike rates above 200. Their aggressive batting gave India early momentum.
Yet it was Sanju Samson who once again stole the spotlight. Continuing his remarkable run of form, Samson scored 89 runs for the second match in a row. Since his strong performance against the West Indies earlier in the tournament, Samson had amassed 275 runs from just 138 balls.
India eventually posted a massive 255 for 5, even surpassing the total they had scored earlier in the tournament at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.
Abhishek Sharma Smashes Record Powerplay
New Zealand attempted a tactical approach by rotating bowlers frequently to prevent Indian batters from settling. Initially, the plan seemed to work. Matt Henry bowled several dot balls to Samson early in the innings. However, the pressure quickly shifted.
Abhishek Sharma launched a fierce counterattack. He smashed boundaries off multiple bowlers and punished any loose deliveries. Facing Jacob Duffy and Lockie Ferguson, Abhishek struck powerful shots that accelerated India’s scoring rate.
He reached his fifty in just 18 balls, the fastest half-century ever recorded in a T20 World Cup knockout match. By the end of the powerplay, India had raced to 92 runs without losing a wicket, with most of the runs coming in the final four overs.
Samson and Kishan Continue the Onslaught
Abhishek’s innings ended soon after when he edged a ball from Rachin Ravindra. But India’s run flow did not slow down. Sanju Samson increased the pressure by hitting powerful sixes off Ferguson. He then attacked Ravindra with three consecutive sixes.
At the same time, Ishan Kishan played elegant strokes across the ground. He punished Mitchell Santner with aggressive slog-sweeps and reached his 50 in just 23 balls. By the 14th over, India had already reached 191 for 1, leaving New Zealand struggling to control the scoring.
Neesham Briefly Revives New Zealand’s Hopes
Just when India appeared set to cross 300 runs, Jimmy Neesham produced a dramatic spell. In one over, Neesham took three wickets for just one run. Samson was caught near the boundary, while Kishan was dismissed soon after.
Suryakumar Yadav also fell after a brilliant diving catch by Ravindra. Despite this brief collapse, India still managed to maintain a strong scoring rate.
In the final overs, Shivam Dube launched a powerful attack, smashing Neesham’s last over for 24 runs with multiple boundaries and sixes. India finished their innings at 255 for 5, setting New Zealand a very challenging target.
Bumrah Leads India’s Dominant Bowling Attack
New Zealand needed an extraordinary batting performance to chase the huge total. However, India’s bowling quickly put them under pressure. Jasprit Bumrah delivered a sensational spell. His off-cutters proved extremely difficult to play, and he finished with 4 wickets for just 15 runs in four overs.
Early breakthroughs from Axar Patel and Arshdeep Singh further damaged New Zealand’s chances. Bumrah’s key wickets included Ravindra and other top-order batters, effectively ending the chase.
New Zealand Fall Short Again in Final
Although Tim Seifert scored a quick 23-ball fifty, the required run rate remained too high.Santner fought with a determined 43 runs, while Daryl Mitchell also tried to stabilise the innings. However, India’s bowlers kept taking wickets regularly.
Eventually, New Zealand’s innings collapsed well short of the target. This defeat marked their fifth loss in an ICC tournament final since 2015, continuing their unfortunate record in major finals.
Brief Scorecard
The victory was sealed when Tilak Varma completed a catch at long-on off Abhishek Sharma’s bowling. The win sparked huge celebrations in Ahmedabad as India lifted the trophy again.
The triumph also brought redemption at the same venue after India’s defeat to Australia national cricket team in the 2023 ODI World Cup final. This time, however, the home crowd witnessed a historic coronation as India successfully defended the T20 World Cup title. Stay tuned with JUSZNEWS for regular updates!
