New Zealand Women Thrash South Africa Women by 80 Runs in First T20I
Amelia Kerr and Georgia Plimmer’s strong partnership powered New Zealand Women to a commanding 80-run victory over South Africa Women in the first T20I at Bay Oval.

New Zealand Women crushed South Africa Women by 80 runs in the first T20I of the five-match series at Bay Oval. After deciding to bat first, New Zealand Women posted 190/7 on the scoreboard in 20 overs. Amelia Kerr and Georgia Plimmer scored blazing half-centuries and added 145 runs for the second wicket. Masabata Klaas (2/15 in 4 overs) was the most successful bowler for South Africa Women, while Nadine de Klerk also took two wickets.

While chasing, South Africa Women lost wickets regularly against the disciplined bowling attack of New Zealand. They managed to score 110/7 in 20 overs and lost the match by a huge margin. Tazmin Brits was the highest scorer for South Africa Women. Sophie Devine (4/12 in 4 overs) was the most successful bowler for New Zealand Women, while Jess Kerr also took two wickets.

Kerr Continues Outstanding Form

New Zealand suffered an early setback when Izzy Gaze was run out without facing a ball. However, Amelia Kerr and Georgia Plimmer quickly took control of the innings and dominated the next 14 overs.

Kerr arrived in strong form after scoring 101 not out and 82 against Zimbabwe. She continued that momentum with a confident innings of 78 runs. This was her fourth consecutive fifty-plus score.

She struck 11 fours and two sixes during her knock, with 56 of her runs coming through boundaries. Kerr consistently found gaps on the offside with precise timing. She also showed creativity in her shot selection, dropping to one knee to clear midwicket and fine leg while also scooping the ball over the wicketkeeper.

A key moment came in the fourth over when Kayla Reyneke bowled a no-ball that eventually cost 19 runs. Kerr took full advantage of the free hit and smashed the ball over long-on. She continued to punish any short or overpitched deliveries.

Plimmer Accelerates After Steady Start

Georgia Plimmer played an equally important role in the partnership. She had missed the Zimbabwe ODI series because of a shoulder injury but returned strongly in this match.

Plimmer began cautiously and scored 37 runs from her first 32 balls. However, she increased the scoring rate after the halfway mark of the innings.

She lofted Nonkululeko Mlaba for a six and then hit two more sixes off Chloe Tryon in the 13th over. Her acceleration helped New Zealand maintain a strong scoring pace during the middle overs.

The 146-run stand between Kerr and Plimmer became the fourth-highest partnership for any wicket in New Zealand women’s T20I history.

Klaas Leads South Africa’s Late Fightback

Most South African bowlers struggled to find the right length on a flat batting surface. Plimmer and Kerr took full advantage of these mistakes. South African captain Laura Wolvaardt used eight different bowlers within the first nine overs in an attempt to break the partnership. However, only Masabata Klaas managed to trouble the batters consistently with clever variations.

The spin trio of Chloe Tryon, Kayla Reyneke and Nonkululeko Mlaba leaked 74 runs in just six overs while taking only one wicket. They often missed their line and bowled too wide outside off stump.

Despite the early damage, South Africa fought back well towards the end of the innings. They picked up the last six wickets for only 44 runs and prevented New Zealand from crossing the 200-run mark. Klaas played a major role in this comeback. She returned in the 14th over and dismissed Kerr with a cleverly disguised leg-cutter. In her next over, she used another slower ball to remove Brooke Halliday. Klaas finished with impressive figures of 2 wickets for 15 runs from her four overs.

South Africa Struggle During Run Chase

South Africa never really looked comfortable while chasing the target. Jess Kerr struck early to remove both openers Sune Luus and Laura Wolvaardt in the fourth over. As a result, South Africa managed only 19 runs during the powerplay. The scoring rate remained slow even after the field spread. New Zealand’s bowlers maintained tight lines and forced several mistimed shots.

Tazmin Brits stayed at the crease for 35 balls but scored only 29 runs. The visiting batters struggled to find boundaries and often either mistimed shots or tried to over-hit the ball. South Africa’s chase collapsed during the middle overs when they lost five wickets for 57 runs. That effectively ended their chances of reaching the target.

Statistics from ESPNcricinfo also highlighted the difference in bowling strategies. South Africa delivered 35 back-of-a-length balls and conceded 55 runs. In comparison, New Zealand bowled only 21 similar deliveries and gave away just 24 runs.

New Zealand also relied more effectively on slower balls and yorkers once the pitch slowed down, showing better understanding of the conditions.

Devine Produces Career-Best Bowling Performance

Sophie Devine delivered a superb bowling performance to seal the win for New Zealand.

She started her spell with a tight three-run over and later removed Chloe Tryon in the 12th over. Devine also kept Tazmin Brits under pressure before dismissing her in the 15th over.

In the 19th over, Devine returned and picked up two more wickets to finish the innings strongly. She ended with outstanding figures of 4 for 12, which became the best bowling performance of her T20I career.

Suzie Bates Returns After Injury

Suzie Bates made her return to the New Zealand team for the first time since October after recovering from a quadriceps injury. Although she had said she might bat lower in the order, she did not get an opportunity with the bat in this match. New Zealand instead sent Brooke Halliday, Maddy Green and Izzy Sharp ahead of her.

However, Bates did contribute with the ball. She bowled the second over of the innings and conceded six runs after starting with a wide delivery. She later returned in the 14th over and finished with figures of 0 for 17. New Zealand may continue to use Bates more as a bowling option as they prepare for the upcoming T20 World Cup in June.
