Rohit Sharma Says India’s ICC Trophy Run is ‘Just the Start’
Rohit Sharma praised the recent ICC trophy wins by India’s men’s and women’s teams and said he hopes this successful run is only the beginning for Indian cricket.

India’s two-time ICC trophy-winning captain Rohit Sharma said the recent achievements of the Indian men’s and women’s cricket teams should only be the beginning of a long period of success.

Rohit spoke about the teams’ performances after the Indian men’s team recently won their third T20 World Cup title and their second consecutive one. The triumph came on March 8 in Ahmedabad. This victory followed another historic achievement when the Indian women’s team won their first-ever ODI World Cup four months earlier in Navi Mumbai.

Rohit Credits Hard Work Behind the Success

Rohit said the recent victories are the result of consistent effort from players as well as the support staff working behind the scenes.

"There's no secret to success, it's all about hard work," Rohit said in Mumbai on Saturday. "International cricketers - men's and women's - they work really, really hard to achieve what they have achieved. Of course, it's not just the players who perform on the field but there's so many people behind the scenes as well who put in so much hard work into that success. So a lot of people and personnel to give credit to."

He emphasised that the achievements belong to a larger group that includes coaches, trainers, analysts and support staff who contribute to the teams’ preparation and performance.

Rohit Proud of Both Men’s and Women’s Teams

The Indian captain said he feels proud to watch both national teams succeed on the global stage over the past few years.

"I feel very, very happy and proud to see what we've been seeing for the last couple of years now to come out with flying colours and achieve what we have achieved, not just men's team but also women's team to win that World Cup in Mumbai was fantastic to watch. And recently now what the men's team did to win the T20 World Cup, what they did was phenomenal."

He added that maintaining momentum will be crucial for continued success.

"And I hope this is just the start, there's no looking back from here because once you get the momentum - and we often talk about momentum in cricket - both men's and women's teams have, all I hope is that we carry this momentum."

Rohit Began India’s Recent ICC Trophy Run

Rohit himself played a key role in starting India’s recent run of ICC tournament victories. Under his leadership, India won the T20 World Cup in June 2024. The team then secured another major title by winning the Champions Trophy in March 2025.

These victories set the tone for a successful period in Indian cricket across multiple levels.

India’s Under-19 teams have also contributed to this impressive run. The Under-19 men’s team, led by Ayush Mhatre, won the World Cup last month in Zimbabwe. Earlier, the Under-19 women’s team claimed their World Cup title in 2025 under the leadership of Niki Prasad in Malaysia.

Next Challenge: Women’s T20 World Cup

India’s next ICC event will be the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup scheduled to begin on June 12 in the United Kingdom.

India have been placed in Group 1 alongside Pakistan, Netherlands, Bangladesh, South Africa and Australia. The tournament will provide another opportunity for the women’s team to build on their recent success and continue India’s winning momentum on the international stage.
