India on Tuesday highlighted the need to ensure safe movement through the Strait of Hormuz. Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to discuss the worsening situation in West Asia.
This marked their second phone conversation since the war involving Israel, the US, and Iran began. In recent days, Modi has also reached out to several Arab leaders to address regional concerns.
Focus on Free and Secure Navigation
After the call, Modi shared details on social media. He said both leaders agreed on the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and secure.
“We agreed on the importance of ensuring safe and free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz,” he said.
He also strongly condemned attacks on the UAE. “Reiterated India’s strong condemnation of all attacks on the UAE that have resulted in loss of innocent lives and damage to civilian infrastructure,” he added.

Concern for Indian Nationals in West Asia
India remains concerned about the safety of its citizens in the region. Around 10 million Indians live in West Asia, including nearly four million in the UAE.
Some Indian nationals have already been injured in Iranian drone and missile attacks targeting infrastructure in the UAE. This has increased India’s focus on protecting its people.
Push for Peace and Stability
Modi said he also extended early Eid greetings to the UAE President. He stressed the need for peace in the region. He said both countries will “continue to work together for the early restoration of peace, security and stability in the region”.
Earlier, on March 2, Modi had also spoken to Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed. During that call, he condemned attacks and supported efforts to reduce tensions.
Outreach to Other Arab Leaders
In addition to the UAE, Modi has spoken to several key leaders in West Asia. These include Mohammed bin Salman, Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, Abdullah II, Haitham bin Tarik, Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Sabah, and Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
Through these discussions, India continues to push for de-escalation and regional stability.
