Fanny Utagushimaninde created history by becoming the first woman to score a century on her T20I debut. She scored 111 not out from 65 balls against Ghana women's cricket team in Lagos during the Nigeria Invitational Women’s T20I Tournament.
Youngest Centurion in Women’s T20Is
Utagushimaninde also set another major record. She became the youngest player to score a century in women’s T20Is. She achieved this milestone at the age of 15 years and 223 days. Earlier, the record belonged to Prosscovia Alako. She was 16 years and 233 days old when she scored 116 runs against Mali in 2019.
Breaks Long-Standing Debut Record
Utagushimaninde broke a long-standing record for the highest score on T20I debut. The previous record was held by Karen Rolton. She scored 96 not out against England in 2005. That match was only the second women’s T20I ever played.
Comparison with Men’s Cricket
In men’s T20Is, only four players have scored centuries on debut. However, none of them represent Full Member teams. Matthew Spoors holds the top score with 108 not out for Canada against the Philippines in 2022. Meanwhile, Gustav Mckeon is the youngest male centurion in T20Is. He achieved this at 18 years and 280 days.
Rwanda Posts Big Total
Utagushimaninde’s innings powered Rwanda women's cricket team to a strong total of 210 for 3. Merveille Uwase added 32 not out from 19 balls.
Interestingly, extras contributed 28 runs, including 25 wides, which was almost as much as the second-highest individual score.
Ghana Struggle in Chase
In reply, Ghana could not keep up with the required run rate. They finished at 88 for 8 in 20 overs. As a result, Rwanda won the match by a big margin of 122 runs.
