A car crashes into pedestrians in Derby, leaving several injured as police arrest the driver and launch an investigation.

A man has been arrested after a car drove into several pedestrians in central Derby on Saturday night. The incident left multiple people injured, with some in critical condition, police confirmed.

Incident Reported on Friar Gate

The crash happened on Friar Gate at around 9:30 pm. Soon after, emergency teams reached the scene and provided immediate treatment to the injured. Authorities then moved the victims to nearby hospitals for further care.

Police Detain Driver Quickly

Derbyshire Police said officers acted quickly and stopped a black Suzuki Swift suspected to be involved in the crash.

They arrested the driver, a man in his 30s, shortly after the incident. He remains in custody as the investigation continues.

Probe Underway, Witnesses Urged to Come Forward

Meanwhile, police have started an investigation and are appealing for information from the public.

“Our investigation is in its early stages, but we want to hear from anyone who saw a black Suzuki Swift being driven in Derby around the time of the incident,” police said.

Area Closed After Serious Incident

Authorities have sealed off the area following the crash. Officials closed Friar Gate from the junction with Curzon Street and Cheapside to Ford Street.

Police have asked people to avoid the area. They also warned that the closures may remain in place for some time.

No Ongoing Threat, Say Police

Although officials described the incident as serious and alarming, they said there is no sign of any continuing threat to the public.

Reacting to the incident, Catherine Atkinson said she was “deeply shocked”.

“My thoughts are with those injured. Please follow police advice and avoid the area,” she said in a social media post.
