At least 23 people died after a passenger bus fell into the Padma River in Rajbari, Bangladesh on Wednesday evening. Authorities quickly launched a rescue and search operation to find those still missing. The accident took place at the busy Dauladia ferry terminal around 5:15 pm. The bus was carrying nearly 50 passengers when it plunged into the river.
Victims of Padma River Bus Accident Include Women and Children
Officials confirmed that the victims include 11 women, eight children, and four men. Authorities have handed over 22 bodies to their families, while one body remains unclaimed.
Rescue Operation in Rajbari Faces Tough Conditions
Rescue teams worked for several hours in difficult weather. They retrieved the submerged bus after nearly six hours using a rescue vessel. A part of the vehicle became visible only after 11:15 pm local time. Later, teams used a crane to pull it out of the river. Meanwhile, divers from fire services and the coast guard continued searching for missing passengers. The military and police also joined the operation.

The bus was travelling to Dhaka, with many passengers returning after Eid holidays. As the bus attempted to board a ferry, the driver lost control. Consequently, the vehicle plunged into the river. A viral video shows the bus nosediving into the water while bystanders scream. Within seconds, it disappears beneath the surface.
Survivors of Rajbari Bus Accident Recount Escape
Some passengers managed to escape by swimming out. Bystanders helped them with ropes and life-saving tubes. A young boy was seen swimming to safety while people on the shore pulled him out. Rescue boats also joined efforts to save others. Earlier reports said around 11 passengers either swam ashore or were rescued, while many others remained missing.
Eyewitness Account of Padma River Bus Tragedy
Witnesses described the incident as sudden and shocking. Terminal supervisor Monir Hossain said, “When the bus was heading towards the ferry from the pontoon, another smaller utility ferry hit the pontoon. It plunged into the river as the bus driver lost control of the steering.”
“Right before our eyes, the bus fell into the river, but we could do nothing,” he added. Officials said several passengers belonged to the same family. Some survived as they were outside the bus, while others were trapped inside.
Bangladesh Orders Probe into Rajbari Bus Accident
Authorities have ordered an investigation into the incident. Tarique Rahman contacted officials to review rescue efforts and directed them to conduct a probe. Rajbari Deputy Commissioner Sultana Akter confirmed that a high-level committee will investigate the cause of the tragedy.
