Péter Magyar has brought a major political change in Hungary by defeating long-time Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Speaking to a cheering crowd in Budapest on Sunday evening, Magyar celebrated the victory and said, “together we replaced the Orbán regime, together we liberated Hungary. We took our country back.”
He described the scale of the win as extraordinary. “Visible from the moon and every window in Hungary,” he said. He also highlighted the high voter turnout, saying, “Never in the history of democratic Hungary have so many people voted, and no other party has ever received such a big mandate.”
Tisza Party Secures Massive Majority
Magyar leads the Tisza Party, which achieved a landslide win. According to early results, the party is expected to gain a supermajority with more than two-thirds of the seats in parliament.
He thanked his supporters, noting that 3.3 million people voted for his party. This is the highest number of votes any party has received in Hungary’s history.
Shortly after the results became clear, Orbán accepted defeat. Magyar also shared that, “Prime Minister Viktor Orban just called to congratulate us on our victory.”
With 97.35% of votes counted, the Tisza Party won 138 out of 199 seats. In comparison, Orbán’s Fidesz secured only 55 seats.
Promise to Rebuild Ties with Europe
During his speech, Magyar promised to improve Hungary’s relationship with the European Union, which had been strained under Orbán’s leadership.
“Hungarians said ‘yes’ to Europe,” he declared. He added that his government would bring Hungary back into the EU’s judicial system and strengthen ties with both the EU and NATO.
Magyar also shared his travel plans as prime minister. He intends to visit Poland first, followed by Vienna, and then Brussels, where the European Parliament meets.
“Hungary has been in Europe for 1000 years and is going to stay there,” Magyar said.
Impact on EU and Global Politics
Orbán’s defeat could bring major changes within the EU. Hungary had often taken a tough stance against EU policies under his leadership. Now, this shift may open the door for financial support, including a €90 billion loan for Ukraine that was earlier blocked.
It may also lead to the release of EU funds that were frozen due to concerns about democratic standards under Orbán’s government.
On the global stage, this result could weaken the influence of Vladimir Putin, who had an ally in Orbán within the EU. It may also affect right-wing political groups in the West, including supporters of Donald Trump.
Reforms Expected in Hungary
Within Hungary, Magyar’s victory could lead to major reforms. His party has promised to fight corruption and restore the independence of the judiciary and other key institutions.
This election marks a turning point for the country, ending a 16-year political era and opening a new chapter in Hungary’s governance.
