IRGC Opens Fire on Ship in Strait of Hormuz, Tensions Spike
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard fired on a container ship in the Strait of Hormuz, escalating tensions as US-Iran standoff and blockade continue.

Iran’s paramilitary force, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), opened fire on a container ship on Wednesday in the Strait of Hormuz. The incident damaged the vessel and raised fresh concerns over ongoing tensions, which could affect potential peace talks involving Pakistan.

According to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), the attack took place around 7:55 am local time. The agency said a Guard gunboat targeted the ship while it was passing through the strait. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and there was no environmental damage.

Ship suffers heavy damage

UKMTO reported that the Iranian boat came close to the vessel, about 15 nautical miles off the coast of Oman, before opening fire. The attack caused “heavy damage” to the ship’s bridge. However, details about the identity and ownership of the ship have not been made public yet.

Meanwhile, shipping activity in the Strait of Hormuz has remained unusually low. Reports indicate that the area saw very little commercial movement on Tuesday. Still, some Iranian oil tankers have managed to move through the region despite the US naval blockade.

US seizure of Iranian ship adds to tensions

The latest incident follows a recent confrontation involving the United States. Days earlier, US forces intercepted and seized an Iranian container ship named Touska near the strait.

The operation involved the USS Spruance, which issued a warning to the vessel. Speaking about the incident, US President Donald Trump said the ship failed to comply, prompting action. He stated that forces stopped it by “blowing a hole in the engine room”. After the interception, the ship was taken into custody by US Marines.

Ceasefire extended but standoff continues

Amid rising tensions, Trump announced on Tuesday that the ceasefire with Iran would be extended. However, he made it clear that the US naval blockade would continue.

On the other hand, Iran has maintained a firm position. Its UN Ambassador, Amir Saeid Iravani, reportedly said that Tehran is ready for talks only if the US lifts the blockade.

Overall, the situation in the Strait of Hormuz remains tense, with both military actions and diplomatic disagreements continuing to shape the crisis.
