US Blockade Targets Kharg Island, Iran’s Critical Oil Hub
The US is using a naval blockade to choke Iran’s oil exports and force talks, even as the ceasefire continues and tensions remain high.

The administration led by US President Donald Trump believes its naval blockade will force Iran to give in. Officials say the move will quickly fill storage at Kharg Island and shut the country’s “fragile Iranian oil wells.”

Kharg Island sits in the Persian Gulf. It handles nearly 90 per cent of Iran’s oil exports. It ships millions of barrels to global markets every day.

US extends ceasefire but keeps pressure

The US wants Iran to agree to a permanent ceasefire. The conflict began on February 28 and shook the Gulf region. Trump extended the temporary truce just before it expired. Pakistan helped broker the two-week ceasefire on April 8.

He said, “Based on the fact that the Government of Iran is seriously fractured, not unexpectedly so and, upon the request of Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, of Pakistan, we have been asked to hold our Attack on the Country of Iran until such time as their leaders and representatives can come up with a unified proposal. I have therefore directed our Military to continue the Blockade and, in all other respects, remain ready and able, and will therefore extend the Ceasefire until such time as their proposal is submitted, and discussions are concluded, one way or the other.”

US warns of economic squeeze

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the US Navy will continue the blockade. He said, “in a matter of days, Kharg Island storage will be full and the fragile Iranian oil wells will be shut in. Constraining Iran’s maritime trade directly targets the regime’s primary revenue lifelines.”

He added, “The US Treasury will continue to apply maximum pressure through Economic Fury to systematically degrade Tehran’s ability to generate, move, and repatriate funds. Any person or vessel facilitating these flows—through covert trade and finance—risks exposure to U.S. sanctions.”

He also said the US will keep freezing funds linked to Iran’s leadership.

Iran calls blockade illegal

The US enforced the blockade after ceasefire talks failed. Iran called it an “act of piracy” and warned the US. The blockade focuses on the Strait of Hormuz. The US wants to increase economic pressure on Tehran.

Iran also tightened its grip on the strait. It used its location to control movement. It briefly reopened the route but shut it again after reports of attacks on ships.

Trump said Iran had “decided to fire bullets” and called it a “total violation.” Iran said it will keep the route closed until the US lifts the blockade.

Tensions remain high

The ceasefire continues, but the conflict is far from over. Both sides keep increasing pressure. Talks remain uncertain, and the situation stays tense.
