Gujarat Titans (GT) secured a dominant eight-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the 37th match of IPL 2026 at Chepauk. After being invited to bat first, CSK managed to score 158/7 in 20 overs.
After early blows from Kagiso Rabada (3/25 in 4 overs) and Mohammed Siraj (1/23 in 4 overs), CSK were struggling at 37/4 after 8.2 overs. Shivam Dube added 59 runs with Ruturaj Gaikwad for the fifth wicket before Arshad Khan bowled him in the 16th over. Short cameos from Kartik Sharma and Jamie Overton helped CSK cross the 150-run mark. Ruturaj Gaikwad remained unbeaten on 74 off 60 balls.
In reply, Gujarat Titans chased down the target comfortably with 20 balls to spare. Sai Sudharsan played a superb knock of 87 off 46 balls, while Shubman Gill scored 33 off 23 balls. Sudharsan and Gill added 58 runs for the first wicket, and Sudharsan later stitched a 97-run partnership with Jos Buttler for the second wicket. Buttler remained unbeaten on 39 off 30 balls. With this win, Gujarat Titans gained crucial points and are now in fifth position with 8 points, just above CSK.
CSK collapse under pace pressure
There appeared to be a wrong reading of the pitch before the game. At the toss, Ruturaj Gaikwad suggested the surface looked dry and hinted that defending a total could be effective, expecting spin to play a role later. However, the conditions turned out to favour fast bowlers instead.
Gujarat Titans stuck with pace during the powerplay, using Rabada and Mohammed Siraj throughout. Chennai Super Kings struggled badly against the extra bounce and speed. Even the introduction of Sarfaraz Khan as an Impact Player in the fourth over failed, as he was dismissed for a golden duck.
CSK slumped to 28 for 3, which became their third-lowest score at the end of six overs this season. Rabada was outstanding. After conceding two boundaries to Sanju Samson in his first over, he came back strongly to pick up two wickets in his next, including Samson’s. Siraj and Jason Holder maintained tight control, conceding less than a run per ball. Rabada finished with 3 for 25 in his four overs.
However, GT’s spinners did not have the same impact. They conceded 43 runs in four overs, with Rashid Khan bowling just one over that went for 21 runs.
Gaikwad holds one end
Despite missing Prasidh Krishna, Gujarat Titans’ bowling unit kept CSK under pressure. Chennai went through a long stretch of 31 deliveries without a boundary between overs 3.5 and 9.1. It took them 11.6 overs to reach 50, making it their second-slowest team fifty in IPL history.
Gaikwad stood firm during this difficult phase. He started with a couple of boundaries but soon shifted focus to building an innings as wickets kept falling at the other end. His patient approach helped him carry his bat deep into the innings.
He scored 74 out of CSK’s total of 158 and faced a high number of dot balls—30 in total, which is the joint second-highest in an IPL innings.
Clinical chase from Gujarat Titans
Chennai faced extreme heat conditions, but Shubman Gill chose to bowl first, a decision that proved crucial. Knowing the target and understanding the pitch behavior, GT approached the chase with discipline and control.
Sai Sudharsan played a key role, following up his previous century with a brilliant 87 off 46 balls. He struck seven sixes, showing clear dominance. In contrast, CSK managed only six sixes in their entire innings.
GT’s chase was so efficient that they reached 100 runs faster than CSK reached their 50 earlier in the match—a gap that often determines the outcome in T20 cricket.
Crowd energy fades late
A crowd of 31,506 turned up at Chepauk and stayed engaged despite CSK’s slow start. They cheered loudly when the team reached its fifty, even though it took 72 balls. Dewald Brevis also received an enthusiastic welcome, especially for his signature gesture of taking a knee while entering the field. However, his performances have not matched the excitement, scoring 64 runs from 53 balls this season so far.
Interestingly, MS Dhoni was not present on match day, but his recorded voice echoed through the stadium speakers, urging fans to “start the whistles.” The crowd responded with energy, keeping the atmosphere alive.
Still, as Gujarat Titans moved closer to victory, belief among the Chennai fans began to fade. By around the 14th over of the chase, many spectators had already started leaving the stadium, sensing the inevitable result.
Gujarat Titans secured a dominant eight-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings after a fiery spell with the new ball shattered CSK early in the match. Kagiso Rabada led the charge with figures of 3 for 25, helping GT climb to fifth place on the points table, while CSK slipped to sixth. Stay tuned with JUSZNEWS for regular updates!
