US President Donald Trump has directed American officials not to travel to Pakistan for further talks with Iran, reversing a plan that had been announced just a day earlier. The decision came soon after Iran’s foreign minister завершed his visit to Islamabad.
US pulls back from planned talks
Trump said the United States is still open to negotiations but wants Iran to take the initiative. Speaking to Fox News, he stated, “They can call us anytime they want.”
Earlier, the White House had announced that Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner would travel to Pakistan’s capital to try to restart ceasefire discussions. However, Trump cancelled the plan before the trip could begin.
Trump explains decision
Trump said he personally stopped the officials from leaving. He told Fox News, “I’ve told my people a little while ago they were getting ready to leave, and I said, ‘Nope, you’re not making an 18 hour flight to go there. We have all the cards. They can call us anytime they want, but you’re not going to be making any more 18 hour flights to sit around talking about nothing,’”
He also criticised Iran’s leadership on his platform Truth Social, writing, “There is tremendous infighting and confusion within their ’leadership.’ Nobody knows who is in charge, including them,”
Iran questions US intent
Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi responded cautiously. After completing his visit to Pakistan and meeting senior officials, he said it remains unclear whether the United States is “truly serious” about diplomacy.
