BRICS Foreign Ministers Back India’s Key Priorities, Condemn Terrorism
BRICS foreign ministers backed India’s key diplomatic priorities, condemned terrorism and supported UN reforms, although the meeting ended without a joint statement over differences on West Asia

Member nations at the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (FMM) backed several major diplomatic priorities proposed by India and extended support to the four pillars of India’s chairship — Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.

At the same time, BRICS foreign ministers strongly condemned terrorism in all its forms, including cross-border terrorism, and denounced the 2025 terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir. The BRICS FMM Outcome Document also rejected double standards in the global fight against terrorism, marking a significant diplomatic win for India.

BRICS Supports UN Reforms and India’s Global Role

Meanwhile, BRICS nations reiterated their support for comprehensive reforms in the United Nations system, including reforms of the Security Council. Member countries said the UN should become more democratic, representative, effective and efficient.

Importantly, Russia and China openly supported India’s aspiration to play a greater role in the UN system, including a larger role in the Security Council.

India-Led Initiatives Receive Recognition

Furthermore, the meeting recognised several India-led global initiatives. For the first time, the BRICS Outcome Document mentioned the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI), highlighting growing international acceptance of the Indian initiative.

BRICS members also recognised Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) as an important tool for inclusive economic growth. In addition, the bloc acknowledged the International Big Cats Alliance as a key Indian initiative for biodiversity conservation and wildlife protection.

The ministers also congratulated India for successfully hosting the AI Impact Summit in February 2026. They said the summit would help strengthen international cooperation in the field of artificial intelligence.

Traditional medicine systems also found mention in the document, reflecting India’s continued efforts to promote traditional knowledge in global healthcare cooperation. Moreover, ministers welcomed progress on creating the BRICS Online Archival Database, an initiative proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

BRICS Meeting Ends Without Joint Statement

However, despite broad agreement on several issues, the BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting in New Delhi ended on Friday without a joint statement. Member countries failed to reach a consensus on the worsening conflict in West Asia. As a result, India issued a chair’s statement instead of a joint declaration after the annual meeting. The statement highlighted that BRICS nations held differing views on the West Asia situation.

Consensus Reached on Several Key Issues

Despite disagreements over West Asia, BRICS countries managed to achieve consensus on nearly 60 other agenda items. These included energy cooperation, Digital Public Infrastructure, trade, climate action, financial inclusion and reforms of global governance institutions. Overall, the meeting highlighted BRICS members’ growing support for India’s diplomatic priorities and global initiatives, even as differences remained on sensitive geopolitical issues.
