Israel’s former Prime Minister and leading opposition figure, Yair Lapid, has strongly criticized the emerging agreement between the United States and Iran. On Saturday, he argued that the proposed deal would not achieve any of Israel’s objectives from the ongoing conflict and accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of mishandling the Iran issue.
In a post on social media platform X, Lapid said the developing agreement would leave Israel without any meaningful gains despite months of conflict.
“The agreement currently taking shape does not achieve any of Israel’s war objectives,” Lapid wrote.
According to Lapid, the deal would allow Iran’s current leadership to stay in power while preserving its missile capabilities. He also claimed that Tehran would still have the ability to rebuild its nuclear programme, despite repeated warnings and pressure from US President Donald Trump.
Lapid Calls It Netanyahu’s Failure
The opposition leader placed the blame squarely on Netanyahu, describing the situation as a major diplomatic and strategic setback for Israel.
Lapid called the development “Netanyahu’s complete failure,” arguing that Israel had lost influence over decisions affecting its own security. He said the country had been reduced to a position where it must follow directions from other nations on matters of national defence.
He further stated that “no press conference, media manipulation, or AI-generated video can hide this failure.”
Growing Concern Inside Israel
Lapid is not alone in voicing concerns over the potential agreement. As reports of a possible US-Iran deal have emerged, several Israeli politicians, security officials, and experts have also expressed reservations.
The conflict between Iran and the United States began on February 28, and both sides now appear close to reaching an agreement aimed at ending the war. However, many Israeli officials fear that the proposed terms could negatively affect Israel’s security interests.
According to reports from Israeli media outlet i24 News, some Israeli officials believe the agreement could strengthen Iran’s government while restricting Israel’s ability to conduct military operations in Lebanon.
Experts and officials who have spent years working on issues related to Iran reportedly view the memorandum of understanding expected to be signed soon as a potential threat to Israel’s security.
Fears Over Regional Impact
Israeli officials are also concerned about the broader consequences of the agreement. One official told Channel12 that the immediate effects would include the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and renewed stability for Iran’s leadership.
“What will happen immediately “is the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, the resuscitation of the regime, and a slap in the face for the Iranian public,” the official said.
The criticism comes as Washington and Tehran move closer to a possible settlement after months of hostilities. While supporters may see the agreement as a path toward ending the conflict, critics in Israel fear it could strengthen Iran and undermine Israel’s long-term security interests.
