FIFA World Cup 2026: South Africa Keep World Cup Hopes Alive With Late Equaliser Against Czech Republic
South Africa kept their World Cup knockout hopes alive as Teboho Mokoena’s late penalty secured a 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic, earning Bafana Bafana their first World Cup goal in 16 years.

South Africa kept their hopes of reaching the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time alive after earning a hard-fought 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic in Atlanta on Thursday. A late penalty from Teboho Mokoena rescued a point for Bafana Bafana and ensured that both teams remain in contention for a place in the last 32.

The Czech Republic looked set to claim all three points after Michal Sadilek’s early goal gave them the lead. However, South Africa showed determination in the closing stages and found an equaliser from the penalty spot to keep their campaign alive.

Early Czech Pressure Pays Off

Both teams entered the match looking to recover from defeats in their opening World Cup fixtures. The Czech Republic responded strongly from the start and almost took the lead within the opening minute.

Star striker Patrik Schick, one of the few internationally recognized names in the Czech squad, found himself in a promising position but headed wide of the target when he should have scored.

The missed opportunity did not prove costly. Just five minutes later, the Czechs broke the deadlock with a well-worked move. Adam Hlozek delivered a cross into the box, and Alexandr Sojka cleverly guided the ball into the path of Michal Sadilek. The midfielder calmly finished past South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams to make it 1-0. The early goal gave the Czech Republic control and placed South Africa under pressure once again.

South Africa Struggle to Create Chances

South Africa are appearing at the World Cup for the fourth time and have never advanced beyond the group stage. Under coach Hugo Broos, the team has made significant progress in recent years.

After missing several World Cups, Bafana Bafana qualified for this tournament and built confidence by finishing third at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. However, their return to football’s biggest stage has highlighted weaknesses, particularly in attack.

Despite enjoying strong support from the crowd, South Africa struggled to create clear scoring opportunities for much of the match. The Czech defence remained organized, while their opponents lacked the cutting edge needed in the final third.

Czech Republic Miss Chances to Seal Victory

The Czech Republic had several opportunities to extend their lead and put the match beyond South Africa’s reach. Shortly after halftime, Vladimir Darida was presented with a promising chance but took too much time before shooting, allowing the opportunity to disappear. Later, Lukas Cerv attempted a powerful long-range effort, but Williams reacted well and tipped the ball over the crossbar.

Those missed chances eventually proved costly.

Mokoena Delivers Historic Goal

Although Atlanta’s futuristic stadium featured thousands of empty seats, the fans who attended were largely supporting South Africa. Their patience was rewarded late in the match.

With seven minutes remaining, Thapelo Maseko fired a shot that struck the arm of Czech midfielder Pavel Sulc inside the penalty area. Referee Tori Penso, who was part of an all-female officiating team, immediately pointed to the spot.

Mokoena stepped up and confidently converted the penalty, drilling the ball into the net to level the score at 1-1. The goal carried extra significance as it was South Africa’s first World Cup goal in 16 years, sparking celebrations among their supporters.

Late Push Falls Short

South Africa nearly completed a dramatic comeback moments later. Relebohile Mofokeng found space and tested Czech goalkeeper Matej Kovar, but the shot-stopper produced an important save to keep the scores level.

Neither side could find a winner in the closing minutes, and the match ended with both teams sharing the points.

Qualification Race Remains Open

The draw leaves both South Africa and the Czech Republic on one point in Group A. They sit two points behind co-hosts Mexico and South Korea, who were scheduled to meet later on Thursday.

The result means both teams are still alive in the tournament, but victory in their final group matches will likely be necessary to secure progression.

South Africa will face South Korea in a crucial encounter, while the Czech Republic have a difficult challenge ahead against Mexico at the Estadio Azteca.

For now, Mokoena’s late penalty has ensured South Africa’s World Cup dream remains alive, while the Czech Republic will regret not taking advantage of the chances that could have secured a vital victory.
