South Africa Women cruised past India Women by six wickets in the 18th match of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 in Stretford. After being invited to bat first, India Women posted 158/7 in their allotted 20 overs. Although India lost wickets at regular intervals, they maintained a healthy run rate, which helped them put up a competitive total on the board. Shafali Verma was the top scorer for India Women. Marizanne Kapp (2/27 in 4 overs) was the most successful bowler for South Africa Women, while Shabnim Ismail also claimed two wickets.
In reply, Shree Charani (2/24 in 4 overs) gave India Women an excellent start by striking twice in the sixth over to put South Africa Women under pressure. However, Marizanne Kapp and Tazmin Brits added a crucial 97 runs for the third wicket to bring South Africa Women close to victory.
When Shafali Verma (1/22 in 4 overs) dismissed Tazmin Brits in the 17th over, it appeared that India Women might stage a comeback. However, Kapp continued her brilliant innings and guided South Africa Women across the finish line with five balls to spare. Marizanne Kapp played a superb, blistering knock of 81 runs off 45 balls and remained unbeaten until the end. The result leaves both India and South Africa on four points in Group 2, keeping the qualification race wide open.
Kapp Delivers an All-Round Masterclass
Marizanne Kapp once again showed why she is one of the world's leading all-rounders. After restricting India with figures of 2 for 27 from four economical overs, she returned to anchor South Africa's chase.
Her innings was not without fortune. India missed several opportunities to dismiss her, including difficult chances when she was on 9 and 25, and a straightforward catch when she had reached 65. However, Kapp made India pay for those missed chances by staying unbeaten and taking her side over the finish line.
Alongside Brits, she also neutralized India's most dangerous spinner, Deepti Sharma. The pair scored 44 runs from Deepti's four overs, reducing India's chances of controlling the chase.
India Make Flying Start With the Bat
India began aggressively after choosing to bat first on a fresh Old Trafford surface. Shafali Verma immediately signaled her intent with boundaries, while Smriti Mandhana joined the attack from the other end. The pair dominated South Africa's new-ball bowlers and raced away during the powerplay.
Mandhana displayed a variety of strokes, driving through the covers and playing innovative attacking shots. Shafali was particularly severe on Chloe Tryon, collecting 14 runs from the first three balls of one over. At one stage, South Africa appeared to have few answers as India surged to 47 for 1 after just four overs.
South Africa Fight Back With Key Wickets
Just as India seemed set for a huge total, South Africa struck back. Shafali, who looked in complete control, received a lifeline from luck when South Africa successfully reviewed an appeal. Replays showed she had gloved a short ball from Shabnim Ismail through to the wicketkeeper.
India's innings then lost momentum quickly. Yastika Bhatia was trapped lbw by Ayabonga Khaka, while Jemimah Rodrigues departed after offering a simple catch from a leading edge. India suddenly found themselves at 82 for 4 in the 11th over after a dominant start.
Middle Order Fails to Capitalize
With wickets falling, the responsibility shifted to captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Deepti Sharma. Harmanpreet briefly counterattacked and helped add useful runs during the middle overs. However, after receiving treatment on the field, she was dismissed for 24 when an Ismail delivery crashed into the stumps.
South Africa's bowlers then tightened their grip on the match. They restricted Richa Ghosh with disciplined bowling and cleverly packed the leg side to remove Deepti. Kapp delivered another crucial breakthrough in the final over when Ghosh was caught attempting an attacking shot.
India struggled badly at the death, scoring only 36 runs from the bat in the final four overs. Despite their excellent start, none of the batters managed to convert their innings into a substantial score. Shafali's 31 ended up being the highest individual score for India.
India Strike Early During the Chase
India's bowlers made an ideal start while defending 158. South African captain Laura Wolvaardt found it difficult to score freely and eventually fell for 20 when she hit a return catch to left-arm spinner N Shree Charani.
The spinner struck again almost immediately as Annerie Dercksen missed a big shot and was bowled. South Africa finished the powerplay at 25 for 2, significantly behind the required scoring rate and under pressure.
Kapp and Brits Change the Match
At 45 for 2 after nine overs, South Africa still had plenty of work to do. That was when Kapp and Brits took control. Kapp immediately put pressure back on India by attacking Prema Rawat and collecting 10 runs from the first two balls of an over. Her ramp shot became one of the standout strokes of the innings.
Brits initially played herself in before launching a huge six off Deepti Sharma over long-on. The pair steadily rebuilt the innings and brought up a fifty partnership in the 12th over.
Brits also survived an lbw decision after successfully reviewing the umpire's call when she was on 28. Even when boundaries became difficult to find, both batters remained calm and rotated the strike effectively. India's missed chances allowed them to settle further.
Decisive Assault Breaks India's Resistance
The turning point arrived in the 15th over. Facing Arundhati Reddy, the South African pair collected 16 runs in a single over. Brits started with a boundary straight back over the bowler's head before Kapp produced consecutive boundaries with a scoop and a sweep.
That over shifted the momentum completely in South Africa's favor and effectively sealed the chase. From there, South Africa comfortably completed the target to register a valuable six-wicket victory.
