ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026: West Indies Women Cruise Past Sri Lanka to Register Third Straight Win
Stafanie Taylor's calm finish and Hayley Matthews' brilliant spell guided West Indies Women to a five-wicket win over Sri Lanka Women, securing their third straight victory in the Women's T20 World Cup 2026.

West Indies Women thrashed Sri Lanka Women by five wickets in the 17th match of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 in Bristol. After being invited to bat first, Sri Lanka Women managed to score only 98 runs in 19.4 overs. They struggled with the bat throughout the innings. Hayley Matthews (3/15 in 4 overs) was the most successful bowler for West Indies Women, while Karishma Ramharack also claimed two wickets. Nilakshi de Silva was the top scorer for Sri Lanka Women.

In reply, West Indies Women also lost wickets at regular intervals despite maintaining a healthy run rate. At one stage, they were reduced to 70/5 after 11.2 overs, and it looked as though Sri Lanka Women might turn the match around. However, Stafanie Taylor kept her composure and guided West Indies Women across the finish line with 23 balls to spare.

With this victory, West Indies Women continued their impressive run in the tournament. The win marked their third consecutive triumph and moved them level on points with England at the top of Group 2, trailing only on net run rate. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Women's chances of reaching the next stage suffered a major setback.

Matthews Leads Dominant West Indies Bowling Display

Captain Hayley Matthews played a crucial role in setting up the victory. After West Indies elected to field first, their bowlers immediately put Sri Lanka under pressure. Matthews struck early and finished with outstanding figures of 3 for 15.

Sri Lanka's batting line-up collapsed inside the powerplay as they slumped to 24 for 4. From that position, they never managed to recover fully. The early wickets severely damaged their innings and left them struggling to build partnerships.

Matthews started the destruction by removing key batters during her opening spell. Vishmi Gunaratne fell after offering a leading edge, while Chamari Athapaththu mistimed a pull shot and lost her wicket. Harshitha Samarawickrama also departed after failing to control a cut shot. When Chinelle Henry dismissed Imesha Dulani, Sri Lanka had already lost four wickets with only 24 runs on the board.

Spin Attack Exploits Sri Lanka's Weakness

West Indies entered the match with a spin-heavy strategy, knowing Sri Lanka have often struggled against spin bowling in T20 cricket since the last World Cup.

Matthews led the charge, while Ashmini Munisar and Karishma Ramharack provided excellent support. Munisar, brought into the team specifically to strengthen the spin department, and Ramharack shared three wickets between them.

The tactic worked perfectly as Sri Lanka lost seven of their ten wickets to spin. The bowlers consistently maintained pressure and prevented the batters from scoring freely. Eventually, Sri Lanka were bowled out for just 98 runs with two deliveries remaining in their innings.

Nilakshi de Silva Fights Lone Battle

Amid the batting collapse, Nilakshi de Silva was the only Sri Lankan batter to offer significant resistance. She scored 30 runs from 26 balls and helped stabilize the innings through partnerships worth 34 runs and 23 runs alongside Kavisha Dilhari and Kawya Kavindi.

Those stands were among the few productive moments in Sri Lanka's innings, as the batting unit struggled to gain momentum throughout.

After Nilakshi was dismissed while attempting an aggressive shot towards deep square leg, Sri Lanka's innings quickly lost direction again. The team managed 60 runs for the loss of three wickets during the middle overs, but the final overs produced only 15 runs as West Indies' spinners tightened their grip on the contest.

Sri Lanka's Fielding Mistakes Prove Costly

Defending a modest target required a near-perfect performance in the field, but Sri Lanka failed to capitalize on several key opportunities.

The fielding side conceded 23 extras during the chase, including 13 wides. These unnecessary runs significantly eased the pressure on West Indies.

Sri Lanka also dropped three catches, with two of those chances coming shortly after taking wickets. In a low-scoring match, such moments can change the game's direction, and Sri Lanka paid a heavy price for those errors.

Several run-out opportunities were also missed, allowing West Indies to escape difficult situations.

Matthews and Dottin Provide Strong Start

Chasing 99 for victory, West Indies began confidently. Matthews and Deandra Dottin added 28 runs for the opening wicket, giving their side a solid foundation.

Although Sri Lanka fought back by taking wickets during the middle overs, the target remained within reach. The chase briefly became tense when West Indies slipped from 36 for 2 to 70 for 5.

At that stage, Sri Lanka sensed an opportunity to create pressure and potentially force an upset.

Stafanie Taylor Guides West Indies Home

Veteran batter Stafanie Taylor once again demonstrated her experience and composure under pressure.

With wickets falling around her, Taylor remained calm and focused on rotating the strike while avoiding unnecessary risks. Her sensible approach ensured there were no further collapses.

Taylor's six from a free hit was the only maximum of the entire match and highlighted her ability to take advantage of scoring opportunities when they appeared.

Appropriately, she hit the winning runs for West Indies. The match ended with another missed Sri Lankan chance, as Taylor was dropped at midwicket before completing the victory.

Her steady innings ultimately ensured West Indies crossed the finish line comfortably and maintained their unbeaten run in the tournament.

The victory strengthens West Indies' position in Group 2 as they continue their push for a place in the knockout stage. Their spin attack once again proved decisive, while experienced players such as Matthews and Taylor delivered when it mattered most.
