FIFA World Cup 2026: Paraguay Knock Germany Out of World Cup in Thrilling Shoot-out Victory
Paraguay stunned Germany with a dramatic penalty shoot-out victory after a 1-1 draw, knocking the four-time champions out of the FIFA World Cup and securing a historic place in the Round of 16.

Germany's FIFA World Cup campaign ended in heartbreak after Paraguay stunned the four-time champions with a 4-3 victory in a penalty shoot-out following a thrilling 1-1 draw at Boston Stadium. The South American side produced a disciplined display before holding their nerve from the spot to book a place in the Round of 16.

The match was filled with drama, including a controversial disallowed goal for Germany in extra time and a decisive missed penalty by Jonathan Tah, who endured a difficult finish after seeing what appeared to be the winning goal ruled out.

Paraguay Make Bright Start

Paraguay began the contest with confidence and immediately put Germany under pressure. Julio Enciso caused problems from the left flank, while Júnior Alonso tested Manuel Neuer within the opening two minutes, forcing the veteran goalkeeper into an early save.

Germany struggled to settle into the game and failed to create meaningful opportunities during the opening half. Paraguay, meanwhile, continued to threaten with quick attacks and deservedly took the lead just before the break.

In the 42nd minute, Matías Galarza delivered an excellent cross into the penalty area, where an unmarked Enciso headed the ball past Neuer. The goal marked Paraguay's first-ever knockout-stage goal at a FIFA World Cup, achieved in their sixth appearance in a World Cup knockout match.

Havertz Brings Germany Back

Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann responded by introducing Leon Goretzka at half-time in an attempt to improve his side's performance. However, Germany continued to struggle after the restart. Joshua Kimmich nearly gifted Paraguay another goal with a careless mistake, but Neuer once again came to his team's rescue by denying Enciso.

Germany finally found an equaliser through a moment of quality. Florian Wirtz delivered a dangerous low cross into the box, and Kai Havertz cleverly glanced a header into the bottom-right corner to make it 1-1.

The pair almost combined again in the 77th minute. Wirtz created another excellent opportunity, but Havertz directed his free header too close to Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill, who reacted quickly to push the effort away.

VAR Denies Germany in Extra Time

Germany believed they had found the winning goal late in extra time. Nathaniel Brown swung in a superb corner towards the back post, where Jonathan Tah powered a header into the net. German celebrations were cut short after a lengthy VAR review. The referee ruled that Waldemar Anton had blocked goalkeeper Orlando Gill, disallowing the goal and keeping the scores level.

Moments later, Jamal Musiala escaped with only a yellow card after a reckless challenge on Galarza. Germany then wasted another golden opportunity before the end of extra time. Anton met a close-range header but failed to beat Gill, sending the match to penalties.

Gill Shines as Paraguay Triumph in Shoot-out

Orlando Gill became Paraguay's hero during the penalty shoot-out. The goalkeeper guessed correctly to save Kai Havertz's weak penalty, giving Paraguay the early advantage. Mauricio confidently converted his attempt to strengthen Paraguay's position. Joshua Kimmich scored Germany's opening penalty before Gustavo Gómez and Jamal Musiala both converted successfully.

Matías Galarza calmly sent Neuer the wrong way with another excellent finish. Gill then produced another crucial save, stopping Nick Woltemade's penalty. Although Antonio Sanabria missed the chance to extend Paraguay's lead by firing wide, Germany still needed perfection.

Nadiem Amiri converted to keep Germany alive, and Neuer briefly revived his side's hopes by saving Fabián Balbuena's penalty. However, Jonathan Tah then blasted his effort well over the crossbar, handing Paraguay another opportunity to seal the victory. José Canale stepped forward and emphatically smashed his penalty high into the net, securing a famous 4-3 shoot-out win and sending Paraguay into the Round of 16.

Germany Pay the Price for Poor Performance

Germany's elimination reflected an underwhelming overall display rather than simple bad luck. Although they won their opening two group matches and came close to equalling their record of 12 consecutive World Cup victories, their performances declined sharply. They were outplayed in their final group-stage match against Ecuador and again failed to impress against Paraguay.

The early warning signs appeared almost immediately. Alonso's effort after just 63 seconds became the earliest shot on target Germany have faced in a World Cup match on record, highlighting Paraguay's aggressive start. Germany may feel disappointed by the VAR decision that ruled out Tah's goal, but they struggled to control the game for long periods.

Nagelsmann's decision to leave Jamal Musiala out of the starting lineup in favour of Deniz Undav also raised questions, as Germany found it difficult to connect midfield with attack throughout the contest.

Wirtz Creates Chances but Germany Lack Cutting Edge

Florian Wirtz remained Germany's brightest attacking player. He constantly threatened from wide areas and created four chances, the most by any player in the match. He also finished the tournament with three assists. However, Germany failed to make the most of his creativity.

Despite registering 21 shots, Germany produced only 1.49 expected goals (xG), showing that most of their attempts came from poor positions and rarely troubled Paraguay's organised defence.

Canale Leads Paraguay's Defensive Masterclass

Paraguay's defence delivered one of its finest World Cup performances. José Canale was outstanding throughout the match. The central defender won all five of his tackles and made an incredible 15 clearances. No other player on the field recorded more than eight clearances.

His commanding display helped Paraguay withstand constant German pressure and ultimately laid the foundation for their historic victory.

Historic Result for Both Nations

The shoot-out also produced a remarkable statistic. Germany suffered their first-ever defeat in a penalty shoot-out at the FIFA World Cup, extending a disappointing run in which they have now failed to reach the Round of 16 in three consecutive tournaments.

Paraguay, meanwhile, celebrated one of the greatest victories in their football history. They now move into the Round of 16, where they will face either France or Sweden as they continue their memorable World Cup journey.
